Dorothy I. Ireland Jan. 3, 1910 — Nov. 23, 2004 Graveside services will be Monday in Eureka for Tracy resident Dorothy I. Ireland, 94, who died Tuesday at Sutter Tracy Community Hospital. Born in Ottumwa, Iowa, Mrs. Ireland lived in Tracy with her daughter and son-in-law for the past nine years. She previously lived in Eureka. Mrs. Ireland and her husband opened their Eureka home for foster care during the 1950s and 1960s, and lovingly fostered 513 children. She delighted in cooking and baking for the children and family. Over the years, after she retired, would receive visits from former foster children hoping to taste her trademark homemade cinnamon rolls once again.
In the last nine years of her career, she worked as a field case worker with the elderly. She was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star Camilla Chapter in Eureka, having served as Worthy Matron. She served as Royal Matron of Order of the Amaranth in Eureka, and the White Shrine of Jerusalem as a member of its drill team. But her greatest happiness was serving many years as Mother Advisor of the Humboldt Assembly, Order of the Rainbow for Girls. She went on to serve for many years as a Grand Deputy for California Rainbow Girls. She was happy to see both her daughters and three of her granddaughters serve as Mother Advisors of IORG assemblies in Tracy and Mojave. She enjoyed collecting Beanie Babies, crocheting edgings and embroidering pillowcases for her family, and especially enjoyed traveling by motor home to family reunions.
Mrs. Ireland is survived by her sons, Jim E. Ireland of Albuquerque, N.M., and Rick Nelson and his wife, Roxanne, of McKinleyville; daughters Sharon Cox and her husband, Ron, of Mojave, and Sandra Pattee and her husband, Richard, of Tracy; 17 grandchildren, including Jo Dee Fish, Richard W. Pattee and David Pattee, all of Tracy, and Jamee Skidmore of Mountain View; 25 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 65 years, James Dermit Ireland, who died in 1995; her son, David L. Ireland, who died Sept. 29; her parents; and two brothers. Hotchkiss Mortuary, 5 W. Highland Ave., is handling arrangements.
Pierce Mortuary, 707 H. St., Eureka, will handle final arrangements.
A family graveside service will begin at 10 a.m. Monday at Ocean View Cemetery, 3975 Broadway St., in Eureka.
