Dorothy Kuhlman, age 101 years, of Hubbard, IA, died on Wednesday, September 3, 2014 at Hubbard Care Centerin Hubbard.Dorothy Irene Kuhlman was born January 3, 1913, to William Jr. and Mattie (Becke) Sharpshair, in Steamboat Rock, IA. Dorothy was the fourth of thirteen children and spent her childhood growing up in Steamboat Rock where she was also baptized and confirmed. She graduated from Steamboat Rock High School in 1930. On Sunday afternoon, May 3, 1936, Dorothy was wed to Bernerd Kuhlman by Rev. Bizer at the Zion Church in Hubbard, IA. Together they raised two children, David and Mary Ann. Dorothy and Bern were married for 65 blessed years and made their home in Hubbard, where Dorothy was a devoted member of the community and active in volunteer and charitable work. She taught Sunday school and was a member and leader of the Guild at Zion Church. Dorothy was also a founding member and officer of the New Horizon Women’s Club. Dorothy strongly believed in the importance of education and had a passion for life-long learning. She enjoyed traveling and spending time with family and friends. During her lifetime, she traveled throughout the United States and Europe. She had a great appreciation for art, music and gardening, taking pride in the beautiful geraniums on her porch each summer. Dorothy loved books of all kinds, had an insatiable appetite for reading, and enjoyed writing stories about her family history and her life growing up in Steamboat Rock. Dorothy celebrated her 100th birthday on January 3, 2013. She had a party at the Hubbard Care Center, with many family members traveling hundreds of miles to be with her on her special day. Dorothy passed away peacefully on September 3, 2014, at the Hubbard Care Center. Dorothy was a loving and devoted wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. She will most be remembered by her faith, her love, her grit, compassion for all people, her wit, and her ability to always remain a lady. Those thankful for having shared her life include her children David and his wife Sandy of Bonita Springs, FL; Mary Ann and her husband Mike Maland of Rochester Hills, MI; six grandchildren; seven great grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, her twelve siblings, and her husband Bern.
