She grew up near Frederick, SD and graduated with the Frederick High School class of 1949. Dorothy then went on to receive her degree from Northern State Teachers College. On May 25, 1952 Dorothy married Donald Kensler in Aberdeen, SD. She taught school for 17 years in Brown County, Mellette and Northwestern.
