Dorothy died Thursday, September 27, 2012, at St. Joseph's Rehabilitation and Care Center in Norfolk. Dorothy J. (Mellick) Wylie, daughter of Raymond E. and Nina M. (Overman) Mellick, was born November 4, 1928, at Battle Creek, Nebraska. Dorothy grew up in Norfolk, Nebraska, where she attended Norfolk Public Schools. After receiving her education, Dorothy went to work for Dudley's Laundry Service in Norfolk. On June 21, 1952, she was married to Donald P. Wylie at the United Methodist Church in Winside, Nebraska. For the first two years, the young couple farmed with Donald's grandfather near Winside, until moving to Norfolk where Donald was employed. From this point forward, Dorothy would call Norfolk home the rest of her life. Dorothy and Donald were blessed with three children: first, daughters Kathy and Laura, and later, a son Byron. After the girls were of school age, Dorothy worked for a time at Dale Electronics in 1969 and 1970, then returned to the role of being a full-time housewife and mom after the birth of Byron. Dorothy truly loved life itself, and lived it to the fullest. She had a great sense of humor, and her children loved to joke around and lovingly "give her a bad time". Dorothy enjoyed gardening and canning, loved to hug, and went on numerous camping and fishing trips to Ponca, Nebraska, and Yankton, South Dakota, with her family. Her love for the outdoors also included riding motorcycle for many years. Dorothy was a greeter at Westridge United Methodist Church in Norfolk, where she was a long-time member, and also worked in the Church nursery. Dorothy volunteered countless hours at the Norfolk Senior Center, and appeared in many radio and television commercials in the Norfolk area for the center. She enjoyed attending softball games, was a huge Husker fan, had an extensive collection of penguin figurines, and loved playing cards with her family and at monthly card parties with her friends. But her greatest love was for her Savior, Jesus Christ, and her children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great-great grandchildren. Dorothy's legacy and love for life and family survives her in her children, Kathy Bennington, Laura Wylie, and Byron (Jill) Wylie, all of Norfolk, Nebraska; seven grandchildren, Jamie (Raun Matteo) Bennington of Norfolk, Bobbie Rupp of Colorado Springs, Colorado, Jesse (Dawn) Bennington of Norfolk, Krista (Brandon) Fischer of Norfolk, Nicole (Jesse) Finkral of Branson, Missouri, Payton Wylie of Norfolk, and Jaxson Wylie of Norfolk; 17 great-grandchildren; three great-great grandchildren; brother, Bill Mellick of Santa Monica, California; in-laws, Laura (Lowell) Baker of Kingsley, Iowa, Elsie (Cowboy) Longnecker of Norfolk, Joann Wylie of Lincoln, Nebraska, and Darrell (Evelyn) Wylie of Port Orchard, Washington; as well as numerous nieces, nephews, relatives, and friends. Dorothy was preceded in death by her husband, Donald Wylie in 2002; parents; parents-in-law; son-in-law, Jim Bennington in 2006; sister-in-law, Jan Mellick; brother-in-law, Clarence Wylie; and an infant sister, Violet Mellick. Funeral services Monday October 1, 2012, 10:30 A.M. at Heartland Baptist Church--Norfolk Visitation Sunday September 30, 2012, 2:00 P.M. - 6:00 P.M. at Brockhaus-Howser-Fillmer Funeral Home
