Dorothy June Hayes was born on August 12, 1924, at Sidney, Iowa, she was the twin daughter of Stuart Argyle and Mabel Ruth (Whipple) Tate. She graduated from Sidney High School in 1942. After graduation Dorothy taught country school in a one-room school house in Fremont County Iowa. On December 14, 1943, Dorothy Tate and Henry L. Hayes were baptized and united in marriage at the chapel of the Church of Good Tidings, in Omaha, Nebraska, by Rev. R.R. Brown. Henry was in the Marine Corps and served in the South Pacific during WWII, Dorothy followed along in the many moves; then in 1946, they settled in Shenandoah, Iowa, near their families. Henry started his welding career at a local car dealership and Dorothy stayed at home and took care of their four children. In 1952, Henry started working for the Iowa Highway Commission in Shenandoah, and in July 1962, Henry was transferred to the repair shop in the Ames Office. After their family was raised, Dorothy wanted to try her hand at working with the public, taking a job at P.M. Place, then Ferguson Bakery, Walt’s News Stand and lastly as a switchboard/receptionist at the Iowa Department of Transportation main office. Dorothy was a quick study and loved working the switchboard she knew most department phone numbers by heart, she enjoyed the extra paperwork she did for different departments, but her first love was that switchboard. In 1987, both Dorothy and Henry retired and Henry opened a welding shop, he made and repaired wrought iron rails for home and businesses and Dorothy learned to cut and twist wrought iron to help Henry in his business. Dorothy was a quilt maker and loved making handmade quilts and her designs were superb and colors divine. She felt she was a novice but the rest of her family and friends felt like she was a real master and she was asked to show her quilts and discuss her love for quilting with several quilt groups. Dorothy belonged to two quilt groups and was known for her fine stitch, which she took pride in. She worked with her daughters as they started quilting and encouraged them along the way and they both developed into good quilters and love quilting as Dorothy did. When the family moved to Ames, they joined the First Christian Church where the whole family became involved in church and church activities. Dorothy taught Sunday school and was Circle leader as well as Deacon in the communion service. Her love for her Church and her belief in God, Jesus and life hereafter was witnessed. Dorothy and Henry loved their service to God and were always ready to help those in need. Dorothy and Henry became volunteers in the Mary Greeley Guild and at least one evening every week you could find them working at the greeting desk, it was their night out, so they often had dinner at the cafeteria. Those two loved the social side of volunteering as they visited with so many wonderful people. They became icons as they often filled in for those unable to work. Many employees (nurses and doctors) got to know them quite well. Dorothy got several awards for her many hours of volunteering. Dorothy and Henry loved being parents, they felt they were born to be parents so they took parenting serious and did their best raising good kids and when the time came they were the “BESTEST” grandparents to eight grandchildren and six greatgrandchildren with a seventh due in July and unfortunately she missed meeting this little one. She loves/d children of all ages but especially the ones she could hold on her lap and get eye contact. AND they all loved her. Dorothy and Henry had pets over the years, dog (just three), cats (many) and the last one was so special to them that they named him Socks and his ashes are mixed with theirs in their final resting place. Each pet was very special and when they passed on, they were never forgotten. Dorothy is survived by her four children: Sheri (Larry) Olson of Ames, Henry S. Hayes of Ames, Randy (Margie John Ganiban-) Hayes of Roseville, California and Teri (Van) Villwock of Ames. Eight grandchildren: Alenia (Mark) Lohnes, Patty (Bill) Suelflow, Pam (Ryan) Jones, Amelia “Millie” (Christian Sax) Hayes, Isaac (Morgan) Hayes, Micah Hayes, Spenser (Amy Weinberg) Villwock and Sami (Tony Galloro) Villwock. Six great-grandchildren: Paul Lohnes, Sydney and Carson Jones, Eliana Villwock, Sierra Suelflow, and Ernie Galloro and a seventh in July 2020, Hayes-Sax. And a niece, Donna (Dave) Marson of Council Bluffs, Iowa. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Henry L. Hayes in 2014; a twin brother, Donald Tate; brother, Brooks Tate and sister, Ardith Cozad and an infant grandson, Lawrence Villwock. Funeral arrangements are under the direction of the Adams Funeral Home and online condolences may be left to Dorothy’s family at www.adamssoderstrum.com.
