Description	:	DOROTHY M. SHANNON, 98, of Winfield, Kansas, passed away Monday afternoon, December 19, 2011 at Cumbernauld Village in Winfield. Born on February 14, 1913 in Dodge City, Kansas, she was the daughter of Roy L. and Edna S. (Nicklas) Kehl. The family moved to a farm north of La Junta, Colorado where she grew up. SHANNON, 98, of Winfield, Kansas, passed away Monday afternoon, December 19, 2011 at Cumbernauld Village in Winfield. Born on February 14, 1913 in Dodge City, Kansas, she was the daughter of Roy L. and Edna S. (Nicklas) Kehl. The family moved to a farm north of La Junta, Colorado where she grew up. She received her education in rural Cheraw, Colorado and later graduated from Cheraw High School in 1931. She was united in marriage to Jacob Doyle Shannon on February 25, 1934 in Oxford, Kansas. The couple lived in the Burden area and later resided south of Atlanta where they farmed and raised livestock for 57 years. Dorothy was also a fulltime homemaker. The couple retired and moved to Winfield in 1995. Mr. Shannon preceded her in death on August 8, 2003. Dorothy was a member of the Atlanta United Methodist Church and she had served as president of UMW. She also taught Sunday School, sponsor youth groups and served on several committees. Dorothy had served as presidents of school organizations and was a member of the HDU Extension Service and also served as a 4H leader. She was a 50 year member and Past Matron of Burden Chapter 128 Order of the Eastern Star. Entertaining and cooking were Dorothy's passions. Her family includes: Her son: Kenneth Dee Shannon of Cushing, OK; Her sister: Vera Berry of Salt Lake City, UT; Her sister-in-law: Naomi Howard of Wichita, KS; Her grandchildren: Michael D. and Dallas Shannon, and Jeffrey D. and Dawn Shannon; Her step-grandchildren: Delroy Spoon, Dayla Ankrom, Dorene Donohue and Darlene Spoon; Her great-grandchildren: Tyler, Jazmyne and Maximus Shannon, and Alexa Shannon; Her 9 step-greatgrandchildren; and Several nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by her brother Leslie Kehl. Services were held for Dorothy M. Shannon at 10:30 a.m. Dec. 23 in the Colonial Chapel of Miles Funeral Service. Julie Ann Shields officiated. Burial was in new Salem Cemetery. Burden Chapter 128 Order of Eastern Star provided Eastern Star committal rites. Honorary casket bearers were Fred and Mary Chilcott and Bud and Grace Lowe. Casket bearers were Jess Biddle, Stanley Nichols, Kenny Rutherford, Jeff Shannon, Mike Shannon and Delroy Spoon. Music included "He Touched Me," "Precious Lord, Take My Hand" and "Hymn of Promise." The soloist was Nianne Mohlstrom. Irma Scholfield was the pianist. Memorials are to Cumbernauld Village.
