Barber, 88, of Abilene, died Sunday, July 26, 2009, at Dignity Care in Salina. She was born Sept. 13, 1920, in Sligo, Mo., the daughter of James R. and Millie (Schultz?) Solomon. She grew to womanhood in Abilene and attended the local schools, graduating from Abilene? High School. On June 20, 1941, she married William D. Barber in Council Grove. They made their home in Wichita, and she worked as a secretary for Eugene Deekston Engineers. For many years, she was the administrative secretary for the Hutchinson Hospital. After moving to Abilene in 1977, she was the church secretary for the First United Methodist Church until retiring. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Abilene, a life member of the DAV, American Legion, a past member of the Oil Secretary Association of Wichita, and the Salt City chapter of the American Business Women Association. Survivors include her daughter, Marilyn Kay Barber of Salina, and other relatives. She was preceded in death by her husband, William Barber, on Sept. 19, 1992. Funeral services will be at 1:30 p.m. Thursday, July 30, at the Martin-Becker-Carlson Funeral Home in Abilene, with the Rev. Dick Near officiating. Burial will be in the Abilene cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home until time of service. Memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of Salina and left at the funeral home.
