However, this quietude has been broken in the past eight weeks. First, in February when Monterey’s big fire drew page width space in the dailies, then again on Monday, last, the same being true when headlines were devoted to two sizeable automobile wrecks, which resulted in four deaths and five critically injured persons. Three of the dead, all of Monterey, and one of North Carolina, who perished in the automobile accidents on Saturday and Sunday nights, respectively— an account of which appeared in detail in the Staunton Evening Leader, in Monday’s edition and which follows Dennis R. Beverage, 26 Dorothy Helmick, 18 James E. Simmons, 33 The fourth, fatally injured in another crash Sunday night, was: Robert Wesley Guthrie, 50, of Asheville, N.C. Trail of Flame The accident in which the three died occurred about nine o’clock Saturday night near the Jack Anderson residence on Route 250 a half mile west of Monterey. The automobile in which the five were said to have been proceeding toward Monterey was struck in the rear by a truck traveling in the same direction. The car’s gasoline tank was punctured, the fuel ignited, and the vehicle became a flaming, speeding torpedo for 380 feet, finally plunging over a 15-foot embankment and coming to a halt near a wire fence. Dennis Beverage and Miss Helmick, in the rear seat, were unable to extricate themselves, and, badly burned, died there as the machine was destroyed. Mr. Simmons, Clarence Beverage, and Miss Gum were said to have been in the front seat. The first-named, reported to have been the driver, although Clarence Beverage was said to have been the owner, was fatally burned when, in attempting to escape, he became entangled in the wire fence. There was a later report that one leg or foot was pinned under the car. Passerby finally extricated him; took him to a doctor’s office in Monterey, where he died. Miss Gum and Clarence Beverage were dragged from the blazing car; were taken to a doctor’s office, and brought to the hospital here by the Obaugh ambulance from McDowell, arriving at five minutes before midnight. Double Funeral The double funeral for Miss Dorothy Helmick and Dennis Beverage was held at the Seybert Chapel at one o’clock with the Rev. Mr. Long, officiating. The church was crowded and many gathered on the outside to pay a last respect to the two. The casket of the veteran was draped in the American Flag. Delegations of the posts here of the American Legion and Veterans of Foreign Wars were active in the ceremony. The two were burned to death in the back seat of the coach. Dr. C. B. Fox, coroner, said at the inquest that death was due primarily to fractured skulls; the secondary cause, fire. In his opinion their skulls were fractured at the time of the collision and they were in an unconscious state when the car left the road and burned. Dennis R. Beverage, born Feb. 26, 1921, was a veteran of World War II, serving in the army more than three years, from 1943 to 1946. Six months were spent in the Philippines. He is survived by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Olen S. Beverage of Strait Creek; five brothers, Henry, Fred, John, Clarence, and Thomas; three sisters, Mrs. Charlie Rexrode, Miss Marie Beverage, and Miss Ida Beverage. Interment was in the cemetery at the church. Miss Helmick is survived by her step-father and her mother, Mr. and Mrs. Alvie Gum; four brothers, Homer, Elmer, Ralph, and Melvin, of Strait Creek Community. The body was buried in the Puffenbarger Cemetery.
