Dottie was born on March 9, 1925, in Albia, Iowa to Alma (Duphorne) and Francis Emmett Mahon. She grew up on their farm near Albia and attended Albia High School. She went on to become a registered nurse, earning her degree at the Cadet Nursing Program at Broadlawns Hospital. Dottie was born on March 9, 1925, in Albia, Iowa to Alma (Duphorne) and Francis Emmett Mahon. She grew up on their farm near Albia and attended Albia High School. She went on to become a registered nurse, earning her degree at the Cadet Nursing Program at Broadlawns Hospital. On May 27, 1950, Dottie married William (Bill) N. Hopkins in Albia. She worked as the Vice-president and Treasurer for her family photography business, Hopkins Associates. Dottie survived tuberculosis contracted while she was a student nurse, and went on through her life as an active member and supporter of a variety of organizations, including Planned Parenthood, Questers Inc. (Wallace 1205), Living History Farms, the Japan American Society of Iowa, and The Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR). She was an avid international host and ambassador, participating in numerous Friendship Force and Elder Hostel programs. At the young age of 65, she became a certified scuba diver. Dorothy was a member of the Westminster Presbyterian Church. She was preceded in death by her parents, Alma and Francis Mahon. Dottie will be missed by her loving husband of 62 years, Bill Hopkins; daughter, Lynn Hopkins married to Theodore Szostkowski, and their children, Alaina and Katherine Szostkowski, all of Lexington, MA; son, William M. Hopkins, and his daughters, Hailee and Hattie Hopkins, all of Des Moines; a sister, Reba Thomas of Topeka, KS, and many nieces and nephews. Also mourning her loss are members of the J. E. King family of Albia, IA. J. E. and Helen welcomed Dottie into their home when she was in high school, and she remained close to the King family throughout her life. Dottie was a devoted and loving wife, mother, grandmother, sister, aunt, and friend. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Planned Parenthood of Greater Iowa, 1171 7th St., Des Moines, IA 50310 or Westminster Presbyterian Church, 4114 Allison Ave., Des Moines, IA 50310.
