Funeral services were held Saturday, November 28, at the Salem United Church of Christ in New Salem. Visitation was at Elm Crest Manor and the Buehler-Larson Funeral Home Chapel in New Salem. Dorothy was born on July 10, 1913 in Montana, the daughter of Jacob and Elizabeth (Luft) Damm. She was baptized and confirmed at the Settlement Church north of Culbertson. She attended school in the north Brockton area at the Biem School. Like so many other children during that time of the century, she only went to the 8th grade so she was able to help with the farm work. Dorothy preferred working outside in the fields behind a team of horses. She married Clarence Schwartz on August 15, 1936. They started their family with the birth of Vem and Dale while they were living in Montana. In October of 1943, They packed up everything they owned and moved to North Dakota, staying with Clarence's sister, Dorothy until a farm of their own became available a few miles away. They increased their family with the birth of Karen and Connie. While on the farm, Dorothy assisted Clarence with the farm work. They raised sheep. Some of the wool was carded and put into a few of the quilts that she liked to make. They raised crops, cattle, and milked cows. Dorothy did all the tasks a farm wife did. She cooked, canned produce and baked. Many gatherings would included her fried chicken or some type of delectable dessert. When she did have time, Dorothy loved to do crafts, crocheting, quilting, sewing clothes, plastic canvas, embroidery and tending her flower garden. Clarence and Dorothy moved into New Salem in 1975. After Clarence passed away, Dorothy got involved with homemaker, church activities and her neighbors. She loved to meet with people, visit and play cards or bingo. She still enjoyed her other leisure time activities. She also had opportunities to travel all over the United States with bus tours, her sister or with one of her children. These travels took her to California, the east coast, Tennessee, Colorado, Montana,Washington and all places in between. In May of 2009, Dorothy moved to Elm Crest Manor, where she enjoyed listening to music and playing bingo. She is survived by her four children, Vern (Janet) Schwartz of Missoula, Montana, Dale (Yvette) Schwartz of Ellensburg, Washington, Karen (Roger ) Eisenbeis of Mandan and Connie Schwartz of Bismarck; two sisters, Christina Dick and Erna Brown; two brothers, Alfred Kaschube and Otto Kaschube; special friends, LaDonna, Sandy, Gordonna and Jeanette, Beryl and Durwood.; eight grandchildren; and many great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Clarence; her sisters, Bertha Swallow, Molly Lauridsen; and two brothers, David and Harold Kaschube. (Buehler-Larson Funeral Home)
