Dorothy Minnie (Balvanz) Dubberke was born August 22, 1923 in Eldora, Iowa. She was the daughter of Walter and Selma (Brandt) Balvanz. She was baptized, confirmed and a lifelong member of St. John’s Evangelical Lutheran Church in Hubbard. Dorothy Minnie (Balvanz) Dubberke was born August 22, 1923 in Eldora, Iowa. She was the daughter of Walter and Selma (Brandt) Balvanz. She was baptized, confirmed and a lifelong member of St. John’s Evangelical Lutheran Church in Hubbard. Dorothy received her education by attending rural “Fisher” country school north of Hubbard and graduated from Hubbard High School in 1941. She was the last surviving member of the Class of 1941. On April 27, 1947, Dorothy was united in marriage to Wayne Dubberke while he was home on Military leave before departing for his duty in Japan. After honorable discharge from the Army they lived and farmed southwest of Hubbard where they raised two sons, Michael and Jeffery. Dorothy worked alongside Wayne during planting and harvesting. She enjoyed taking care of her flowers and vegetable garden. She was an excellent cook and enjoyed sharing with others. Dorothy was always willing to lend a hand helping to care for Wayne’s blind Uncle Gus for many years, assisting at the local community food pantry and in the kitchen at St. John’s during Bible school where she was a member of the Mission Circle. She was also long-time member of the Legion Auxiliary, charter member of the Double Six Bridge Club and never missed a day reading the Des Moines Register. Most of all Dorothy loved her family, attending her son’s events and never missed a beat with her grandchildren. Her great-grandchildren lit up her world! Dorothy is survived by her sons Michael (Deb) and Jeffery (Renee); four grandchildren Walker Dubberke, Nicholas (Megan) Dubberke, Chelsea (Jason) Minor and Angela (Dustin) Sump; three great-grandchildren Jack Dubberke and August and Weston Minor; along with many other relatives and friends. Preceding her death were her parents, husband Wayne and brother Donald Balvanz.
