Born in 1921, in Lavonia, Ga., the next-to-youngest of eight children, she graduated from Taylors High School. She attended Bob Jones University in Cleveland, Tenn., where she earned an associates degree in accounting. Initially, she used her degree as a bookkeeper for Taylors Lumber Company and Greenville Steel Company, learning about building materials and then about deeds and loan closings while working at Haynesworth Law Firm. Working as a bookkeeper for builder Alvin McCall, she began building ranch homes in the late 1960's. Hammett later went to work for builder Tom Threatt. Within Threatt's firm, she branched out and began Greenville Development Company. She was building 3,500-plus square foot brick Williamsburg and other style homes, hiring up to 25 subcontractors, by the time she launched Dot Hammett Builder in the late 1970's. Hammett's homes are scattered about Greenville, as well as the subdivisions and the streets within them that she named while working for McCall, including Merrifield Park, Pilgrim's Point and Pelham Estates. She was the first woman residential builder in South Carolina. Perhaps ahead of other women in her time, Hammett pursued her unusual career while devotedly raising three daughters. Many of her contemporaries noted that she was a role model, paving the way for other women in business. By the 1980s Hammett declared semi-retirement, slowing her pace from six to eight custom homes annually to one or two special projects. In her semi-retirement she frequently donated her consulting skills to various building projects of her church and to North Greenville University. With husband Gene, she built two homes on family land on Hammett Road in the Brushy Creek area of East Greenville County, between Taylors and Greer. Eventually, the couple also built their retirement home in the Fairview community. She is survived by her husband, Gene Hammett, and her three daughters, Phyllis Hammett Altenbern and her husband Jim, of Greer, Janis Hammett of Greensboro, N.C., and Leisa A. Hammett, of Nashville, Tenn.; and one grandchild, Grace Walker Goad, of Nashville. Also surviving is her brother, Ray Walker, and sisters-in-law, Rhoda Walker and Miriam Walker, all of Greenville; as well as dear family friends Aileen Odom and Chris Porter. The family is at the home of Phyllis and Jim Altenbern, 111 Silver Ridge Court, Greer. Visitation will be in the gathering space of Taylors First Baptist Church, Tuesday, December 9, 2008, from 9:30-10:45 a.m. The funeral will follow at 11 a.m. in the chapel, with the Reverends Neil Cochran, Dr. Ernest Carswell and Dr. Jimmy Harley presiding. Interment will follow in the church cemetery. Pallbearers include Alan Cochran, Shields Cochran, Stan Hall, Lewis Hendrix, Donnie Johnson, Roddy Ledford and Tom Wise. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in memory of Dot Hammett to Open Arms Hospice of Greenville, 1836 West Georgia Road, Simpsonville, SC 29680; or The Autism Society of Middle Tennessee, 955 Woodland Street, Nashville, TN 37206. Her family would like to thank the many friends and members of Taylors First Baptist who visited and ministered to her.
