Description	:	Dorothy S. Caris, 85, of Mount Pleasant died Saturday, June 25, 2011, at her home. Born Jan. 4, 1926, in Wapello, she was the daughter of Harvey George and Maude Myrtle Ruby Shaw. On Nov. 23, 1947, she married Steward Caris in Morning Sun. He died in 1978. Mrs. Caris taught special education at Mount Pleasant Junior High School from 1966 until retiring in 1991. She developed a store in the school where students learned... Read More	Dorothy S. Caris, 85, of Mount Pleasant died Saturday, June 25, 2011, at her home. Born Jan. 4, 1926, in Wapello, she was the daughter of Harvey George and Maude Myrtle Ruby Shaw. On Nov. 23, 1947, she married Steward Caris in Morning Sun. He died in 1978. Mrs. Caris taught special education at Mount Pleasant Junior High School from 1966 until retiring in 1991. She implemented creative and innovative teaching methods to assist special education students in receiving standard classroom instruction and learning skills they would need in the work force. She developed a store in the school where students learned to run a retail business while selling school supplies to the students. She also taught home economics at Yarmouth High School. She moved from Wapello to Morning Sun at age six and graduated from Morning Sun High School in 1944. She earned a bachelor of arts degree in home economics at Iowa Wesleyan College in 1949, and a degree in special education, with an endorsement in elementary education at University of Iowa. She was a member of First United Methodist Church in Mount Pleasant and United Methodist Women. She was a member since 1949 of T.T.T. Founders Chapter A of Mount Pleasant, and was related to the originating founders of the T.T.T. organization. She was a member of National Education Association, Iowa State Education Association and Retired School Personnel of Mount Pleasant. She was a member of Pi Beta Phi sorority since her days at Iowa Wesleyan. She enjoyed playing cards, especially bridge, and was a member since the 1950s of a long standing bridge group in Mount Pleasant. Survivors include two sons, Robert Caris of Iowa City and David Caris of San Antonio, Texas; one daughter, Jean Caris of Boulder, Colo.; six grandchildren; and one great-grandchild. Besides her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents, one brother and one sister. Visitation will be from noon to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Kimzey Funeral Home in Mount Pleasant, where family will receive friends from 5 to 7 p.m. The funeral for Mrs. Caris will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at First United Methodist Church in Mount Pleasant, with the Rev. David Bracht-Wagner officiating. Burial will be in Forest Home Cemetery in Mount Pleasant. Memorials have been established for First United Methodist Church, Iowa Wesleyan College and T.T.T.
