Description	:	Dorothy (Schmidt) Waltner passed away at her home in Freeman, S.D., Sunday morning, Sept. 23, 2007 after a short battle with cancer. Dorothy was born Sept. 5, 1934 to Abraham and Frieda Deckert Schmidt near Dolton, S.D. As a child, Dorothy attended the Evangelical Mennonite Church and became saved on Sept. 24, 1943. She was baptized on her confession of faith in Christ in August 1947. Later, after her marriage, she joined the Salem Mennonite Church of rural Freeman, where she remained a faithful member until her death. Dorothy was born Sept. 5, 1934 to Abraham and Frieda Deckert Schmidt near Dolton, S.D. As a child, Dorothy attended the Evangelical Mennonite Church and became saved on Sept. 24, 1943. She was baptized on her confession of faith in Christ in August 1947. Later, after her marriage, she joined the Salem Mennonite Church of rural Freeman, where she remained a faithful member until her death. She attended Dolton Public School and graduated from Freeman Academy in 1952. After attending Freeman Junior College, Dorothy was employed at Farmers State Bank in Marion, S.D. She continued to work there as a teller and auditor for many years and had many fond memories of her time there. While attending Freeman Academy, she met John D. Waltner. On July 1, 1955, she and John were united in marriage at the Evangelical Mennonite Church. Four children blessed this union: Terry, Tony, Tom and Heidi. John and Dorothy farmed on the Waltner homestead in Turkey Ridge Valley for 40 years before retiring in Freeman where they both were involved with many voluntary service jobs. Dorothy did the bookwork at the Et Cetera Shoppe and also at the Salem Mennonite Church for a number of years. Dorothy and John enjoyed entertaining and their home was always open to many guests, friends and family gatherings. Dorothy is remembered for her warm personality, interest in others and for her home-cooked meals. Cherishing her memory are her husband, John Dean, Freeman; children Terry and Kaye and grandchildren Jessie and Trey, Marion; Tony, Marion; Tom and Patty and grandchildren Michael and Mason, Holliston, Mass.; and Heidi and Donovan Pepper and grandchildren Dakota and Dillon, Forest Park, Ill. Also surviving are two sisters: Lu Verna (Verne) Goering, Moundridge, Kan., and Lillian (Ralph) Schroeder, Sioux City, Iowa; and one brother, Cliff (Dawne) Schmidt, Olympia, Wash. Preceding her in death were her parents. Psalm 91 held special meaning and brought comfort to her especially during her short battle with cancer, "He will cover you with his feathers and under his wings, you will find refuge; his faithfulness will be your shield." The funeral was held Wednesday, Sept. 26 at Salem Mennonite Church. Interment was at Salem Mennonite Cemetery. Freeman Courier October 2, 2007
