Dorothy Violet Jovin Allard was the first child born to Albert and Ethel Jovin, on Oct. 16, 1917, in St. Ignatius. As a child, she moved with her family several times, attending schools in St. Ignatius; Thompson Falls; Sandpoint, Idaho; and Yakima, Wash. Dorothy rode horseback to attend school in St. Ignatius. Dorothy was an exceptional student throughout, even skipping the second grade, and graduated as the valedictorian of the St. Ignatius High School and Lake County Schools' Class of 1934 at the age of 16. After high school, Dorothy attended Kinman Business School in Spokane, working as a nanny to earn her room and board. Illness forced her to return to the Mission Valley. Dorothy helped her family cook for boarders working on Mission Dam, near her family home. On Nov. 27, 1937, she married Gene Allard. They honeymooned in Glacier National Park and made their first home at the Kerr Dam homesites while Gene worked on the dam. Dorothy was one of the last people in the Kerr Dam powerhouse when the dam was turned on. Dorothy and Gene celebrated their 65th wedding anniversary before his death in 2002. Dorothy and Gene had one child, Diane, whom they spoiled with love. Dorothy, Gene and Diane operated a Grade A dairy farm on the Cheff Ranch near the big canal above Kicking Horse Reservoir until the family moved to Terrace Lake Road in 1955 and transitioned to beef cattle. Over the years, Dorothy and Gene opened their home to many youth, welcoming her brother, sister and niece to live with them, as well as other local children. Once, Gene brought home four small children who needed a home for several months, they were cared for by the Allards with no questions asked. Dorothy also was a special aunt to her many nieces and nephews. Dorothy lived a life full of surprises with Gene. They enjoyed going for long rides, picking wildflowers, singing favorites such as "Always" and "Let Me Call You Sweetheart," and especially fishing together. Dorothy loved the outdoors and nature. She was a skilled horsewoman and could operate a tractor as well as any man. In the 1950s, Dorothy ran the dairy farm while Gene worked in Alaska. She would often pick raspberries from her large patch in the evening after milking the cows. Dorothy loved to garden and always planted a big garden for the family. One family favorite was Dorothy's fresh currant raspberry pie. Dorothy was honored as a 50-year member of Grange. She held several offices and led the Leon Juvenile Grange for many years and served as president of the Ronan PTA. She was a 4-H leader with the Queen Cooks 4-H club in Ronan for 25 years. Dorothy and Gene served as grand marshals of the Ronan Pioneer Days Parade and had the Lake County Fair dedicated to them. Dorothy was a founding member of the Happy Dozen Club, a social club of 12 ladies in the Ronan area in the 1940s. Dorothy was a longtime member of the North Crow Canyon Extension Homemakers Club. The Allards had a large front room so they hosted many parties. Decades after one such party, friends laughed and reminisced about rubbing the pattern off of the new linoleum as they pushed people in dishpans during a game! Dorothy always hosted Christmas Eve and Christmas Day dinner for both her family and her in-laws, changing all of the linens between groups. She loved to cook and try new recipes, but her cream puffs and divinity were the best. Dorothy continued her quest for knowledge all of her life. Dorothy was an avid reader of novels, magazines, nonfiction and the daily newspaper. She read the paper most mornings up until the last week of her life. Dorothy enjoyed learning about people and cultures locally, nationally and internationally. Dorothy traveled extensively through Montana, visited all 50 states, several European nations, Russia, China and Japan. The Allards went to Asia with the Friendship Force, a group focused on fostering positive cultural exchanges. Dorothy was interested in civics and citizenship, serving as a Get Out the Vote volunteer and voting poll worker for many elections. Dorothy was also interested in the preservation of history. She was proud to do several years of research for the Lake County Schools History Project. Dorothy was a beloved grandmother to four grandchildren and two great-granddaughters. Her grandchildren loved to visit her on the farm in the summers, where they would work with her in the garden weeding and watering, in the fields irrigating and putting up hay, and in the kitchen learning how to cook. Dorothy was a great cook, and she encouraged her grandchildren to experiment with new flavor combinations. Grandma Dorothy taught her grandchildren how to work hard. She also showed them how to have treats and enjoy life. A trip to Dairy Queen at the end of a hot summer day and the annual trip to the Western Montana Fair in Missoula were special times. She had high expectations of her grandchildren and was dedicated to their education. Dorothy supported her grandchildren in their many ventures in education and travel. She was extremely proud of her grandchildren. Grandson Allison Grant cared for Dorothy for 3 1/2 years before she transitioned to St. Luke's Extended Care in 2006. This was an incredible gift to Dorothy and the family, allowing her to stay in her home as long as possible. Most of all, Dorothy Allard was a survivor. She was an 18-year breast cancer survivor; she outlived all of her siblings and most of her closest friends. Dorothy was preceded in death by her parents, Albert and Ethel Jovin; her husband, Gene Allard; two brothers, Al Jovin and Bert Jovin; two sisters, Eileen Pittsenbarger and Carol Brubaker; nephews, Gary Roeder, Kurt Jovin, and Mark Jovin; and niece, Mary Ellen Pfrimmer. Dorothy is survived by her daughter, Diane and son-in-law Phil Grant of Ronan; granddaughter, Dawn (Romie) Pedersen of Mariposa, Calif.; grandsons, Dana Grant and Allison Grant of Ronan; grandson, Joelfr� Grant of Portland, Ore.; great-granddaughter, Scarlett (Hunter) Sims of Tuscaloosa, Ala.; great-granddaughter, Caroline Pedersen of Mariposa; sister-in-law, Edna Jovin of Missoula; sister-in-law, Ramona Carlson of Dousman, Wis.; numerous nieces and nephews; and many special friends. Interment will immediately follow at Calvary Cemetery in Ronan.
