Description	:	Dorothy Virginia Boyle, 86, of Sioux City died peacefully in her sleep on Saturday, May 10, 2003, at Holy Spirit Retirement Home in Sioux City. Services will be 1 p.m. Thursday at Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church, with the Rev. Merlin Schrad officiating. She will be buried next to her husband in Calvary Cemetery. Dorothy was born to Robert and Susan (Hettinger) Axemaker on Sept. 11, 1916, in White Lake, S.D. She was one of five daughters. She moved to Sioux City at an early age and attended local schools, graduating from Central High School in 1934. She married Larry Boyle on July 7, 1934, and together they raised five children in Sioux City. She took a very active role in her community. She was a member of Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church, Catholic Daughters of America -- Ave Maria Court, Siouxland Senior Center, Sioux City Women's Club, Iowa Democratic Party and the National Alliance for the Mentally Ill. She volunteered many hours of her time with Birthright, Alliance for the Mentally Ill, Sioux City Courthouse Information desk, and Prime-time Connections. She received two extraordinary honors -- she was nominated by the National Alliance for the Mentally Ill board for a special award for her years of advocating for the mentally ill and she was given a commendation by Woodbury County for her service as a member of the Mentally Ill Planning committee. She enjoyed playing bridge, entertaining, traveling, sewing, collecting recipes and keeping fit. She especially enjoyed being part of "Curtain Up" lip sync group with two of her sisters. They performed at many local events. She was a regular contributor to the Sioux City Journal's letters to the editor. She is survived by her children, Jean Jolin of Middleton, Wis., Maurine and her husband, Marc Cloutier of Ste. Agathe Des Monts, Quebec, Joe Boyle and his wife, Cathy of Topeka, Kan., Colleen and her husband, Wayne McLaren of Vancouver, B.C., and Kathleen Boyle of Sheldon, Iowa; 13 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; three sisters, Alvina Langley, Arlene White and Marty Mustapha, all of Sioux City; and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, who died on Aug. 9, 1994, in Sioux City; her parents; and a sister, Marge Mertz. Pallbearers will be Bob White, Ron White, Dennis Langley, Jim Wingert, Rick Boyle and Kelly Boyle. In lieu of flowers, memorials in her name may be sent to Village Northwest in Sheldon, Iowa, the Iowa Alliance for the Mentally Ill, Holy Spirit Retirement Home, Siouxland Senior Center and Hospice of Siouxland.
