Description	:	Dorothy V Emerson LAVALE — Dorothy Virginia Emerson, 81, of LaVale, went to be with the Lord on Thursday, July 29, 2004, at her home. Born April 17, 1923, in Cumberland, she was the daughter of the late Albert Herman Couter and Lillian Marie (Rosser) Couter. She was also preceded in death by her brother, Charles William Couter. Read More	Dorothy V Emerson LAVALE — Dorothy Virginia Emerson, 81, of LaVale, went to be with the Lord on Thursday, July 29, 2004, at her home. Born April 17, 1923, in Cumberland, she was the daughter of the late Albert Herman Couter and Lillian Marie (Rosser) Couter. She was also preceded in death by her brother, Charles William Couter. Mrs. Emerson was the last surviving member of her immediate family. Raised in Rowlesburg, W.Va., by her grandparents, Charles and Lula V. Miller, Mrs. Emerson graduated from Rowlesburg High School and attended Potomac State College. She then transferred to Allegany Hospital School of Nursing in Cumberland where she received her registered nursing degree in 1945. After graduation, she worked at Allegany Hospital (now the WMHS Sacred Heart Campus Hospital) primarily as head nurse in medical surgery. She was a United States Navy cadet nurse from 1944-1945. Later, Mrs. Emerson taught medical surgical nursing at Memorial Hospital for 15 years. She also accepted a position as the executive director for the League for Crippled Children and served from 1971-1986. She held membership in the American Nurses' Association and the State Nurses' Association and was district one president from 1962-1964. She received numerous awards including Who's Who in American Nursing, The Society of Nursing Professionals from 1990-1991 for significant contributions to the nursing profession; Who's Who Among Human Science Professionals from 1992-1993 for significant accomplishments and leadership; and, Who's Who in Medicine and Health Care from 1997-1998 for outstanding achievement in their field of endeavor and for significant contributions for the betterment of contemporary society. Mrs. Emerson is survived by her husband, Don Allen Emerson; her daughter, Dian M. Williams and her husband Tim, LaVale; her granddaughter, Kathryn M. Williams, Herndon, Va. Friends will be received at the Adams Family Funeral Home, P.A., 404 Decatur St., Cumberland, (http://www.adamsfamilyfuneralhome.com"/) on Sunday, Aug. 1, 2004, from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. The family will also receive friends at the church one hour prior to the service. A funeral service will be conducted at the Cornerstone Baptist Church on Monday, Aug. 2, 2004, at 10 a.m. with Pastor David Hattenfield officiating and Pastor Ken Korns, assisting. Pallbearers will be Norman Nighengale, Craig Wilson, Wade Morral, Bob Swauger, Bob Keech, and, Jim Miller. Honorary Pallbearers will be Charles Porter, Huot Fisher, Richard Shoop, William Nizinski, Ernie Spriggs, Denny Hockman, Dave Scollick, Jack Kreiling, and Joe Tipton. Interment will be at the Maryland Veterans Cemetery at Rocky Gap. I loved my aunt dearly and will always remember her sweet giving nature, always accepting , never judgmental of me, she was "always my favorite." After working as an RN all day she would come home, cook dinner for everyone and then iron sheets.
