He helped build Special Olympics Illinois into one of the most respected programs in the world with a constant focus on the athletes. He played a significant role at the national and international level having served two terms as Chairman of the North American Association of Special Olympics Professionals, a term on the Executive Committee of the United States Leadership Council (USLC) and many years as a member of the USLC Finance and Development Committee working in support of regional and national fundraising initiatives. Doug was given the Knights of Columbus State Deputies Medallion this past year. A 1973 graduate of Drake University, Doug began his professional career with the State of Iowa, followed by a position at Archer Daniels Midland Company before joining Special Olympics Illinois. In his spare time, he relished his days on the golf course, traveling and woodworking. He held a special place in his heart for his cats, TING & YOYO. Doug was preceded in death by his father, Harold. He is survived by his wife, mother, two brothers, a host of nieces and nephews, friends and his Special Olympics family. He will be sorely missed by all.
