He was born April 13, 1926 in Ottumwa, to Carl and Hazel Black Nelson. He married Betty Hiatt. They divorced. He later married Mary Rupe. She preceded him in death. Surviving are two daughters, Linda (Larry) Stumbo of Des Moines and Nancy (Skip) Butt of Sterling, Ill.; five grandchildren, Gina (Frank) Lopez, Jay (Donna) Butt, Jennifer Tesser, Janelle (Steve) Polzin and Julie (Matt) Hamm; eight great-grandchildren, Halie, Allysa and Royce Butt, Calista and Celeste Lopez, Alec Tesser, Lydia Stumbo and Dylan Polzin; a sister, Marcene Richardson of Ottumwa; five stepchildren, Vicky Wyat of Tuscaloosa, Ala., Sharon Quinn of Kendallville, Ind., Dan Rupe of Springfield, Ore., Gerald Rupe of Eugene, Ore., Gary Voorhies of Walterville, Ore. and their children. He is preceded in death by his parents; and two brothers, Ronald Nelson and Dayton Nelson. Funeral services will be 3 p.m. Friday at the Reece Funeral Home with Rev. Gary Grogan officiating. Burial will be in Shaul Cemetery. Visitation will begin after 1 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home with the family present from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday. A memorial has been established to Hospice of Central Iowa.
