Description	:	Roy, Dr. Douglas Leonard, Halifax, Died February 2, 2015 at the age of 91. Born in North Sydney, the son of Dr. A K Roy and Lillian (Moffatt) Roy. His primary education was obtained in North Sydney and Sydney with premedical studies at Mount Allison University. Read More	Roy, Dr. Douglas Leonard, Halifax, Died February 2, 2015 at the age of 91. Born in North Sydney, the son of Dr. A K Roy and Lillian (Moffatt) Roy. His primary education was obtained in North Sydney and Sydney with premedical studies at Mount Allison University. Following his graduation in medicine from Dalhousie University, postgraduate studies in Internal Medicine and Cardiovascular disease were carried out at the Royal Victoria and Children’s Hospitals in Montreal. He joined the active staffs of the Victoria General, Halifax Children’s and Camp Hill Hospital in 1952 and became a member of the Faculty of Medicine at Dalhousie University. In 1967 he became a member of the Faculty of Medicine, Department of Pediatrics obtaining the rank of Professor of Pediatrics of Dalhousie University. He served as Head of the Department of Cardiology at the IWK Hospital for Children from 1952 to 1995, he was part of the many advances in the diagnosis and treatment of heart disease in children and regarded as one the pioneers of Pediatric Cardiology. National and International positions he held included President of The Canadian Pediatric Cardiology Society, board member of the Canadian Cardiovascular Society and Councilor for Clinical Cardiology section of the American Heart Association. He was the recipient of the distinguished teacher award from the Canadian Cardiovascular Society for meritorious service and for clinical research from the Canadian Heart and Stroke Foundation. Predeceased by brothers Dr. Wallace (Kay), Cmdr RCN Kenneth (Shirley), Dr. Lex (Miriam). He is survived by his wife of 68 years Jean (Rafuse), sons Peter (Jean),Paul (Stella),John (Tracey) and Daughter Barbara (Scott Aikman); Grandchildren, Adam (Sarah Atkinson),Graham ( Janet), Michael, Emily, Alexander Roy and Andrew (Kelly) Peter, Brian (Carolynn Fiedler) and Alan Aikman, Six great grand-children. Community service included a long association with the Greater Halifax YMCA. Founding President of The Nova Scotia Sailing Association, Commodore of the Royal Nova Scotia Yacht Squadron, Vice President of the Canadian Yachting Association. He was dedicated Member of the Nova Scotia Bird Society and served as a board member for several years. He enjoyed a great love of the out of doors, music and was a dedicated salmon fisherman. Visitation will be held at Snows Funeral Home on Lacewood Dr. Halifax on Thursday February 5th at 6:00 pm until 8:30 pm. A memorial service will be held in St Andrews United Church, Robie St. Halifax, on Friday morning February 6th at 11 o’clock. Reception to Follow at Saraguay House, Royal Nova Scotia Yacht Squadron. In Lieu of flowers, donations in memory may be made to the Research Fund of the Cardiology Department of the I.W.K. Hospital for Children, Halifax or The Nova Scotia Nature Trust.
