Description	:	FOSTER CITY - Douglas M. Van Slooten, 80, of Foster City, died Wednesday, Sept. 28, 2011, at the Oscar G. Johnson VA Medical Center in Iron Mountain. He was born on March 19, 1931, in Salem Township, Mich., the son of the late Martin and Sarah (Mulliken) Van Slooten. Doug served in the U.S. Army, serving in Germany. He owned a 265 acre fruit farm in Suttons Bay, Mich., where he grew cherries, apples, pears, and asparagus. Van Slooten, 80, of Foster City, died Wednesday, Sept. 28, 2011, at the Oscar G. Johnson VA Medical Center in Iron Mountain. He was born on March 19, 1931, in Salem Township, Mich., the son of the late Martin and Sarah (Mulliken) Van Slooten. Doug served in the U.S. Army, serving in Germany. He owned a 265 acre fruit farm in Suttons Bay, Mich., where he grew cherries, apples, pears, and asparagus. After retiring from farming in 1972, he went into carpentry and specialized in home building. In 1990, he moved to Foster City, where he loved to be in the woods, hunting and trapping. His passion for trapping was so great, that he often set his traps deep in the woods, and was called upon to help the Department of Natural Resources (DNR). Doug also worked as an elk hunting guide in Montana and had hunted for elk in Colorado, and had gone moose hunting in Newfoundland and Alaska. He also had the unique experience of going moose and caribou hunting on Baffin Island in the Atlantic Ocean, north of the Arctic Circle. Here he spent time with the Inuits and learned their culture. Doug enjoyed his annual fishing trips to Canada with his son Eric and his grandchildren. He had also enjoyed many winters in Florida. Doug is survived by his son and daughter-in-law, Eric and Heidi Van Slooten of Felch; four grandchildren, Shawn (Devon) Van Slooten of Vulcan, Amanda (Eric) Kinonen of Neenah, Wis., Leanna Van Slooten of Greensboro, N.C., and Erica Van Slooten of Neenah; three sisters, Polly (Glen) Stroven of Marne, Mich., Bonnie (Vern) Elzinga of Traverse City, Mich. and Wanda Van Liew of Belmont, Mich.; two brothers-in-law, Jason Wyngarden of Zeeland, Mich. and Ken DeVrees of Hudsonville, Mich.; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death two sisters, June Wyngarden and Mary DeVrees. Visitation will be Saturday from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. at Erickson-Rochon & Nash Funeral Home. Funeral services will be held on Saturday at 11 a.m. the funeral home. Rev. Michael March will officiate. Burial will be in the Foster City Cemetery.
