Description	:	Charlottean, Previously Reported Missing, Had Served in Mediterranean Area. Corporal Douglas N. Cranford of 421 Worthington avenue has been killed in action, somewhere in the Mediterranean area according to a telegram received by Mrs. Cranford Tuesday from the War department. Last December Corporal Cranford was reported as missing in action ad at intervals since that time encouraging messages were received by his relatives from the War department. Little information was received in the final telegram this week, which stated that a letter would follow. Young Cranford was born and reared near Fort Mill, S. C. His parents, Mr. and Mrs. A. J. Cranford, now live in Pineville. His wife has returned to her mother's home in Fort Mill. He was graduated from Fort Mill High school and before entering the Army was employed by the Queen City Mattress and Upholstering company in Charlotte. His military training was received at Fort Jackson, Jefferson Barricks, Dyersburg, Tenn., and Brookley Field, Mobile, Ala. Attached to an engineering battalion with the Air corps, he had been overseas only a month and two days when he went into his final action. Surviving besides his wife and parents are four sisters, Mrs. J. C. Newell, Mrs. R. W. Montague, and Mrs. Clyde W. Smith, all of Charlotte, and Miss Wilhelmia Cranford of the home, and seven brothers, one of whom is in the armed forces, now stationed in Hawaii. The Charlotte Observer Charlotte, NC May 20, 1944
