He died Friday, Aug. 27, 2010, at his home after courageously battling pancreatic cancer for the past five months. --- Douglas William Klein was born on Jan. 6, 1939, the son of William and Gertrude (Wolter) Klein in Madison County. He was raised on the family farm southwest of Battle Creek. He attended St. Peter's church and grade school, graduating from Battle Creek High School in 1957. He married Darlene Knapp on Oct. 19, 1958, at St. John Lutheran Church. Doug was active in the church serving on the school board, as an elder and chairman of the congregation. He farmed and raised livestock for many years with his father and brother Wolter. After the loss of his right arm in a farm accident, he sold feed for Norfolk Feed and Grain for a few years and later returned to the family farming business. In 1989 he started selling Hotsy Pressure washers for Hotsy Equipment of Omaha. He met many customers that also became friends over these years. Darlene would travel with him on some of his overnight travels especially when he would travel to Valentine. They enjoyed traveling to various parts of the country and vacationing with family. He enjoyed playing golf, and piloting single engine aircraft. Both of these hobbies he did with one arm, becoming the first pilot to solo and license in the State of Nebraska with one arm. The last few years he helped his son in-law Mike Goodwater at Goody's Grille where he visited with many friends. In retirement, they were able to spend part of the winters in Texas, Florida, and most recently in California. Fittingly, it was California where the couple honeymooned. Doug is survived by his wife Darlene of 51 years; a daughter Sandra and husband Mike Goodwater of Battle Creek; two sons, Steven Klein of Monrovia, Calif., and Curtis and Julie Klein of Lincoln; grandchildren Hannah Goodwater, Claire Goodwater of Battle Creek, Keaton Klein and Jaxson Klein of Lincoln; one brother Wolter and his wife Bev Klein of Meadow Grove; one sister Alice and her husband Mike Downey of Omaha; several nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews, cousins and dear friends. He was preceded in death by his parents.
