Chelan County Sheriff's officers at the scene this morning said there were strong indications that Starcher had taken his own life. He had been despondent recently, friends said. Starcher's red and white foreign car sat parked on the roadway of the old Chelan Wagon Trail, which winds steeply up the spectacular gorge of the Chelan River from Chelan Falls to south Chelan. He had left his cap on the front seat of the car, but there was no note. A search for Starcher was begun late Monday when it was discovered he was missing. He had arrived as usual Monday awhile at Chelan Fruit Growers, where he has been a field man for 26 years. ??? awhile" and was not seen again. Officers were notified. The sheriff's department said Steve Griffith, Don Craig and Roy Pickett, while searching for Starcher, found his car shortly after 1 am. Chelan Police Chief Mono Faletto and deputy sheriffs Jack Ashby and Norman Iverson attempted to locate Starcher, but darkness prevented their descent down the sheer precipice. His body was sighted at sunrise and a group of officers and volunteers worked their way to the scene and removed it. Starcher had been killed instantly in the fall. Starcher had been active in practically every fruit industry organization and was well known throughout the state. He and Mrs. Starcher, who survives, came to Chelan from the Yakima valley area in 1934. Shortened version of obituary. Mr. Starcher was born in Weston, West Virginia, November 17, 1898 and came west with his parents when three years of age. He married Thela Bowen, July 5, 1927 in Yakima. Survivors are his wife; two sons, Duane B. Starcher, Ann Arbor, Michigan; and Doyle Eugena Starcher, Ephrata; one brother, Bren H. Starcher, Medford Oregon; and two sisters, Mrs. H. T. Heald. New York City; and Mrs. Onolee Rifenberick, Tucson, Arizona.
