Officers said the car skidded into the truck in which Dale Lester Atteberry, 17, and Marcellia Hathaway, 16, both of Lancaster were riding. The McClure auto reportedly drove onto the shoulder of Highway 63 and then skidded sideways out of control into the path of the oncoming Atteberry pickup. The mishap occurred about 8:15 p.m., four-tenths of a mile south of the Iowa line. The injured youths were taken to Kirksville Osteopathic Hospital where the girl's condition was reported as critical. Miss Hathaway sustained head injuried and fractured ribs. Atteberry sustained fractured ribs and lacerations. McClure sustained multiple fractures, with death attributed to a broken neck, according to Bruce [Brice] V. Norman, Schuyler County coroner. The accident was investigated by Missouri State Trooper Joe Bacon. The body is at Norman Funeral Home in Lancaster, Mo. Mr. McClure was born near Floris, on Oct. 17, 1909, the son of Frank and Edith McClure. He had been a cattle buyer at Bloomfield until 1969, when he moved to Oskaloosa and two years ago moved to Lancaster, Mo. Survivors included his widow, Mildred, of Milan, Ill.; two sons, Frank and Jerry of Tuscon, Ariz.; three sisters, Mrs. Ralph Whitacre, Mrs. Paul Archibald and Mrs. Jay Hall, all of Bloomfield; and one brother, Harold of Ottumwa.
