He passed away at the Alterra Clare Bridge Assisted Living Facility in Plymouth, Minn at age 102. Abner was born on January 20, 1906, the youngest child of Frederick and Emilie Buresh. He received his early education at Saratoga Rural School #4 and graduated from Riceville High School in 1923. He continued his studies at Iowa State University (Ames) and the University of Minnesota, and received his medical degree from The State University of Iowa (Iowa City) in 1934. After an internship at Fresno County Hospital, Fresno, Cal., he completed a one-year residency at Rockford Hospital, Rockford, Ill. He also served as a staff physician at Harken Hospital, Oscealo, Iowa, before purchasing the practice of Dr. H.W. Plummer in Lime Springs on November 1, 1939. He practiced family medicine in Lime Springs until 1990. (May 1, 1980, article in the Lime Springs Herald) "How fortunate this community has been to have the experience and service of a family doctor these many years! When we say family it means he has battled drifts to get to homes in winter. It means getting out in the middle of the night. It means perhaps returning from a call to find that he is needed in another direction from town. It can mean contending with fever, broken bones, croup, deranged people, the contrary, the violent, the intoxicated or drug-addicted, the down-hearted and the lonely, the young and the aged. It has meant being on-call to all sorts of auto, farm and home accidents, at the bedside of people in their lingering years. "The picture of Dr. Bruesh with black bag in hand coming up the steps toward your home is as vivid to many people as seeing him in the office. Even the dogs are well acquainted with him." In 1980, the Lime Springs Jaycees honored Abner with their distinguished Service to Community Award. The organization, in presenting the award, cited his many services to Lime Springs in terms of medicine as well as community events and projects. Mentioned were his membership in the original Board of Directors of the Lime Springs Swimming Pool Corporation, his charter membership in the State Line Male Chorus, his active participation on the Lidtke Mill Restoration Board, and his membership in the American Legion. Abner was particularly proud that when the swimming pool was built (1954), Lime Springs had the distinction of being the smallest town in Iowa with a pool. He often said that if one life is saved because the children of Lime Springs learned to swim, all the determination and hard work were well worth the effort! Abner also served the Lime Springs United Methodist Church on many boards and commissions, as a Sunday School teacher and as a member of the Senior Choir. Abner entered the United States Navy in 1942. His Tour of duty included: two months at the Naval Hospital in San Diego; three months aboard the SS Mormack Hawk to the Hebrides; six months at the Naval Hosptial, Milne Bay, New Guinea; 13 months aboard LST's taking part in six initial landings in the South Pacific and the Philippines. He had the distinction of being on the first landing ship to hit the beach at Leyte, Philippines. On returning to the States, he was assigned to Camp Pendleton, Oceanside, Cal. At the time of his discharge, he held the rank of Lieutenant Commander. On November 28, 1940, Abner married Jane Elizabeth Cray of Lime Springs. They had two children: Pamela of Minneapolis, Minn. and Fredric of Ft. Lauderdale, Flor.; three grandchildren, Carrie Cooper, Abbie Zulim and Cray Buresh; and four great-grandchildren, Joey and Connor Zulim and Cailee and Caycee Cooper. Reading, gardening, and yardwork served as sources of pleasure and relaxation to Abner for years. Other hobbies included fishing and hunting. A 1965 fishing trip with Fred and Fredric to Great Bear Lake and Minto Inlet, Victoria Island, which is north of the Arctic Circle, was a fisherman's dream-come-true. Other travels included a family tour of Europe in 1966 and participation in a 1969 Goodwill People-to-People tour of Eastern Europe with 22 other Iowa physicians and their wives. More recent trips included a visit to Egypt and Israel and a cruise to Alaska. Abner took a keen interest in government and politics; was an avid Iowa Hawkeye basketball, football and wrestling fan; and had become a real Bible scholar. A Lime Springs woman asked two local ministers about a certain aspect of Jesus' life. Neither being able to respond, they sent her to Dr. Buresh for the answer. Survivors include his daughter and son, three grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. Private graveside services were held at Pleasant Hill Cemetery in Lime Springs, Iowa. No public services were held. Lindstrom Funeral Home handled the arrangements.
