BAILEY Never was a community more shocked and saddened as when the message flashed over the wires Saturday, October 10, that Dr. C. W. BAILEY had passed away at his home in Pleasant Plain. It seemed almost incredible that he who seemed so light hearted and happy and who was so badly needed here on earth should be called so soon. This is but another instance of "In the Midst of Life we are in Death". He seemingly was in good health and while making a professional call on a patient at Brighton he suffered a stroke of apoplexy. Medical aid and an ambulance was hastily called and he was taken home. A little more than two hours passed and as the clock was striking twelve he closed his eyes on all earthly scenes. Cassius W. BAILEY was the son of Cyrus and Iowa BAILEY, born in Cedar township November 22, 1871. He attended the district school where he was an apt scholar and then to the Birmingham academy. Having decided and being determined upon the practice of medicine as a life work he read under the direction of Norris Bids of Birmingham for 18 months. Then he entered the Keokuk Medical college from which institution he was graduated in 1897. During the Spanish- American war he served as first assistant surgeon to Dr. Roberts who was regimental surgeon. He being mustered out July 8, 1899, and the following September he settled in Pleasant Plain for the practice of his profession. An extensive practice has always been accorded him in recognition of his skill and ability in the line of his profession. He was a member and kept in touch with the Jefferson county southeastern Medical societies. Mr. BAILEY was united in marriage to Miss Josephine HOSETTE May 18, 1900. They established their home in Pleasant Plain. One son came to bless this union, Earl E. who has been at Long Beach, Calif., for the past four years. Dr. BAILEY was always of a happy, sociable nature and as we heard one patient remark "That it always did a patient good to see Dr. BAILEY come in the sick room as he always brought a smile and a pleasant greeting with him". He always found life enjoyable in the acquirement of a large circle of friends. while his advancement in his profession has always been equally agreeable. His charitable acts will never be forgotten. He labored just as hard to save the poor man's life as he did the rich, and many there are who can rise up and call him blessed. He donated the ground for the new Pleasant Plain school building in which he took great pride and he always admonished the school board to save and spare the elm trees there. Besides his wife and son he leaves four brothers, George, Charles and Guy of Birmingham and Robert of Colorado Springs, two sisters, Mrs. Mary DROZ, Richhill, Mo., and Mrs. Nettie HALL of Birmingham. His father and mother and three brothers Isaac, Frank and Will and sister, Mrs. Susie FILSON have preceded him in death. Dr. BAILEY was an honored and a valuable citizen and his friends were legion. Much sympathy is extended to the bereaved. But he is at rest his life work is over with so why mourn.
