He graduated from the Eclectric Medical College in Cincinnati, with a degree of Doctor of Medicine. On March 25,1852, Charles married Mildred Durley Stewart, near Vancouver, Washington. In 1854, Governor Stevens of Washington appointed him the doctor for the Nisqually Indian tribe, and two other tribes in the Pacific Northwest.
