Funeral services were held in the chapel at Huron college and were conducted by Dr. Hubert Ketelle, pastor of the First Presbyterian church in Huron, with Dr. Frank Eversull, president of Huron college assisting. Clifford Alvey, son of J Harry Alvey and Bertha Vergin Alvey, was born July 12, 1908 at Cavour, South Dakota. He received his elementary education at the public schools in Cavour, graduating from high school at the age of 15. Continuing his education he received his B.S. degree in 1928 from Huron college, his M.A. in 1931 and his PhD in 1933 from New York University. He was an instructor at New York University for one year and last year 1934-35 he taught in the graduate school at Purdue University. He spent last summer working in the biological experiment station at Wood's Hole, Mass. Dr. Alvey attained these heights in the biological field despite having fought illness and pain since he was seven years old. He was always cheerful, brave, and most considerate of his parents, friends and nurses, who attended him, during the many months spent at hospitals fighting for his life and a return to health. For the past eight years it seemed that he had won in the fight, but his body weakened by former illness could not overcome the cold which he contracted while at Wood's Hole conducting experimental research. This cold developed into pneumonia and he passed away at Home Hospital at Lafayette, Indiana, Wednesday morning Sept. 11 at 8:30 at the age of 27 Years. His life was rich in sacrifice, labor and service, even though his years were but few. He not only inspired many young people, who came under his influence, to press forward despite handicaps but in these few years his research he has made worthwhile contributions to science, This brilliant young scientist who has given so freely of his life to others has passed into the greater laboratory where all things are made plain by the greatest of all teachers. Clifford Alvey is no more, but his inspiring life still lives in the hearts of all who knew him. Besides his parents, he leaves one sister, Mrs. Thomas Bloodgood to mourn his death.
