A funeral Mass will be celebrated at 11 a.m., Thursday, December 6, 2007, in St. Catherine Catholic Church in Valley City with Rev. Michael Schommer celebrant. Clifford John Klein was born October 24, 1921, at Worthington, Iowa, the son of George and Anna (Fiedler) Klein. Clifford moved with his family to the Eckelson area where he grew up and attended school. He graduated from Eckelson High School in 1938. Clifford attended Jamestown College and graduated from there. He then went to work for DuPont Chemical Company and worked as a chemist in Birmingham, Ala. Clifford then served with the United States government and worked on the Manhattan Project in Oak Ridge, Tennessee. He married Elizabeth O'Hara in 1944 in Oak Ridge, Tenn. He later attended medical school at the University of North Dakota in Grand Forks, and later attended medical school at Loyola of Chicago in Chicago, Ill. He graduated from medical school there. Clifford and Elizabeth moved to Valley City in 1952 where Clifford started his medical practice and the couple raised their family. Elizabeth died in 1973. Clifford married Marion Krueger in 1973 in Valley City. The couple continued to make their home in Valley City as Clifford continued to practice medicine. He retired in 1986. Clifford later returned for another five years part-time before retiring again. Marion died in 1991. Clifford was a member of St. Catherine Catholic Church. He was a dedicated physician who had a passion for the care and welfare of his patients. Clifford served on many professional boards and committees after retirement. He continued with his medical care by serving as president on the Valley City Youth Tobacco Coalition, an organization aimed at educating young people on the dangers of smoking. Clifford had many extraordinary interests, including aviation, photography and creating stained glass. Clifford is survived by his children: Mary Beth (Dan) Shannon, and Tom (Karen) Klein, all of Roseville, Minn.; John "Jay" Klein and Kevin Klein, both Valley City; stepchildren, Virginia (James) Brousseau, LaSalle, Manitoba; Michael (Susan) Krueger, Fargo; Patrick (Jean) Krueger, Brainerd, Minnesota; Leslie Klein (Kenneth) Klingenstein, Casselton; and Jennifer Beal, Fort Worth, Texas; brothers, Robert (Delores) Klein, James (Toopy) Klein, and Eugene (Dorothy) Klein, all Valley City; 20 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren. Clifford was preceded in death by his wives, Elizabeth and Marion; two sons; infant son, Joseph; and Michael; parents, three brothers; Louis, Donald and Vernon; and one step-daughter, Sandra Goffe. The family expresses special thanks to Sheyenne Care Center and the Hospice of the Red River Valley for their loving care.
