Corydon Shimer Brown was born on March 17, 1858 and died in 1954. He attended common school in New Bethel, went to Lebanon, Ohio, taking a teacher's course as a preliminary to his two years teaching, then attended college at Valparaiso, Indiana, for a year, was next at Butler College in Irvington, and finally began the study of medicine at Central Medical College of Physicians and Surgeons in Indianapolis. He received his diploma in 1882 and started his practice of medicine in New Bethel the same year. He married Anna Toon, who was the daughter of Martin S and Jane Toon, farming people and old time residents of Franklin Township. Anna was born on January 2, 1847 and died in 1928. Dr Brown and his wife were members of the New Bethel Baptist Church. He was a member of the Masonic Lodge, #134, Acton, and the Red Men Lodge, #266, New Bethel. In politics, he was a Democrat, but never took an active part in public life due to the arduous demands of his profession, which left him little time for participation in politics. Dr Brown lived to be ninety-six years old. The last two years of his life he resided in Indianapolis and died in St Vincent Hospital, Indianapolis. With his father, he maintained a line of medical practice in the New Bethel community that was unbroken for more than one hundred years. Like his father, he made calls on horseback. One of his first automobiles was an Empire with a horn on the side. Corydon and Anna had three daughters: Mayme, Lula, and Ethel. 2. Dr C S Brown, a leading practitioner for more than sixty years of New Bethel, Indiana, is a man of prominence in this community. In his more active years, his practice took him in all directions from this point into the surrounding country sides. When his father was living, he was referred to as "Young Doctor Brown". Dr Brown was born March 17, 1858, at New Bethel, Indiana, a son of Dr S M and Mahala Brady Brown. The mother was born in Warren Township, Marion County, Indiana, February 5, 1834. At his mother's death, the lad lived with his grandfather, Henry Brady, of Warren Township for some time, but received his grade school education at New Bethel. He attended various schools and colleges before he earned his diploma to practice medicine in 1882. A sketch of Dr S M Brown and Henry Brady appears in this work, both pioneers of an early date. Shortly after Dr C S Brown's graduation from the Central College of Physicians and Surgeons at Indianapolis, he married Miss Anna Toon, the daughter of Martin S and Jane Ross Toon, old residents of Franklin Township. They had three children; Mayme, the wife of Dr William Shimer, and this couple is blessed with a son, William, and a daughter, Mary; Lula (deceased), and Ethel married John McCARTHY. Mr and Mrs McCarthy reside with Dr Brown on the home place. The mother of these children passed away July 26, 1928. Politically, Dr Brown has long been a follower of the Democratic party, although, due to his professional life, he was unable to take an active part. Fraternally, he is a member of the Masonic Order of Acton, Indiana. The family have always attended the Baptist Church of New Bethel. The Browns were among the pioneer families of Franklin Township, where its members have been known as intelligent and honorable citizens, prominent in the development of their community. Dr Brown, at the advanced age of 85 years, gives wise counsel and still practices some medicine in his home town. Here, a long career of successful practice not only brought him his livelihood but also the esteem of his fellow-citizens and the grateful affection of many patients. 3. 8812 Harrison Street - It is possible Dr Corydon and Anna Toon Brown lived in this house before building their house on Southeastern Avenue. 4. 8831 Southeastern Avenue - Corydon S and Anna Toon Brown owned this property in 1883. The house was built by Dr Corydon Brown in about 1884. 5. 9620 Pentecost Road - This building, originally Dr Corydon Shimer Brown's office in New Bethel, now stands at 9620 Pentecost Road and is the property of Anna Kinsey Naue. With his father, Dr Corydon S Brown maintained a line of medical practice in the New Bethel community that was unbroken for more than one hundred years. Before being moved to its present location, it was located in the front yard on the west edge of the lot at 8831 Southeastern Avenue, and did not have the front canopy, which was added later. Some opinions are that his father, Dr Sam Brown, and his brother-in-law, Dr Dan Adams, also used this building before Dr Corydon Brown, however, we are not certain of this fact. 6. DR C S BROWN DIES AT 96 - Dr Corydon S Brown, who died at 96 yesterday in St Vincent's Hospital, had not completely retired from practice until three years ago. Five or six years ago he quit making night calls, but for a time continued seeing patients. His home was at New Bethel. Life resident of the Indianapolis area, Dr Brown was born at New Bethel, the son of Dr Samuel Brown, who brought his family to New Bethel in 1830 from North Carolina. With his father, he maintained a line of medical practice that was unbroken for more than 100 years. A graduate of the old Central Medical College, Dr Brown used to make his calls on horseback. He had practiced medicine 65 years. Two years ago, Dr Brown moved to Indianapolis from New Bethel and lived at 2152 North Meridian. He was a member of New Bethel Baptist Church and Acton Masonic Lodge. Dr Brown's wife, Anna Brown, died in 1926. Services will be at 10:30 AM Friday in Robert W Stirling Funeral Home, with burial at New Bethel. Survivors are two daughters, Mrs Will H Shimer and Ethel B McCarty; two brothers, Dr Edward A Brown and Frank T Brown; a sister, Mrs Danial S Adams; two grandchildren and two great - grandchildren.
