In lieu of flowers, memorials may be send to David's Churdan home or left at the funeral home to be given to worthy causes that David cared for and worked to help. --------------------------- Dr. David C. Lohr of Churdan, Iowa, died at his home on August 27, 2012 of complications of Chronic Lymphocytic Leukemia. Deeply patriotic, he never regretted his military service despite this affliction which possibly stemmed from service in Vietnam. He considered his illness a badge of honor, believing that freedom has a price, which he was willing to pay. He served as an Air Force physician during that war, working at the USAF air base at Cam Rahn Bay, South Vietnam. His service there brought him an appreciation for the field of Infectious Diseases. As a result, he later sub-specialized in that area of medicine. David was born to Helen Hillemann Lohr and Dr. Phillips Lohr on January 25, 1937 in the Churdan, Iowa home of his parents. His grandfather, Dr. O.C. Lohr delivered him, surprising his father, who had been out on a house call. Dr. Lohr completed his pre-med studies at Morningside College in Sioux City, Iowa. He then attended the University of Iowa for his Medical Degree, returning there for both his fellowship in Internal Medicine specialization and his sub specialization in Infectious Diseases. One of his proudest academic accomplishments was passing the exam and receiving his certification in Tropical Medicine in 2010 at the age of seventy-three. He was commissioned as an officer in the U.S. Air Force in 1963 and remained in active duty service for 28 years, retiring in 1991 as a Colonel. He loved the Air Force. Dr. Lohr was stationed twice in Wiesbaden, Germany at Lindsay Air Station hospital. During his second tour, he met his wife, Christine Kelly who worked as a civilian for the U.S. Army. They married in 1983. Dr. Lohr also served on temporary duty with the US Navy working briefly as a ship's doctor on the destroyers USS Samson and USS Barney; at a US Navy Medical Research Unit meningitis clinic in Cairo, Egypt; and on the hospital ship USNS Mercy on its six-month maiden deployment providing humanitarian relief in the Philippines and western Pacific. For his service on the USNS Mercy , he received the Humanitarian Service Medal from President Aquino for work in the Republic of the Philippines, an award of which he was proud. During his military service, he was also awarded the Bronze Star, the Legion of Merit, the Meritorious Service Medal, the Air Force Commendation Medal, the Navy Commendation Medal, the Humanitarian Service Medal, the Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal and the Vietnam Service Medal. A dedicated physician, after his military retirement, he returned to his beloved Churdan, Iowa, and continued practicing medicine. He worked at the Jefferson Clinic as an Internist from 1992 to 2000. He then joined Infectious Disease & Epidemiology Associates in Omaha from 2000 to 2009, practicing Infectious Diseases. From 2005 to 2008 he split his time between the Omaha practice and Japan, where his wife Chris was working. His strong belief in providing to the needy overseas, led him to volunteer as a doctor in 2011 in Arusha, Tanzania, and three times during the 1990's at Hospital Albert Schweitzer in Deschepelles, Haiti. A deeply religious man, he was a member of the First Baptist Church in Churdan, Iowa. He was also active in community affairs, previously serving on the Churdan City Council as well as being a member of the Churdan Lions Club and the Marine Corps League in Sedona, Arizona, where he and his wife lived during the winter. He was also active in "Trees Forever," a tree planting and care organization. An Iowa Hawkeyes fan, he avidly followed them every season. Dr. Lohr lived life to the fullest, never letting age or illness slow him down. Despite being first diagnosed with Leukemia in 1986, he successfully fought the disease for twenty-eight years, during which he continued his military and medical career. He enjoyed fishing and also amateur radio, logging thousands of contacts over his fifty plus years in the hobby. He was an avid Porsche car enthusiast, in 2009 driving his original 1971 911T along the "Cannonball Run" route from New York to Los Angeles in 44 hours and 47 minutes. David is survived by his wife Christine Kelly Lohr of Churdan, Iowa; his four children Elizabeth Koolbeck of Woodstock, MD; Steven Lohr of Sun Prairie, WI; Stephanie Cooper of North Liberty, IA; and Phillips Lohr of Deerfield, IL . He is also survived by sixteen grandchildren; his sister Priscilla Meeks of Columbus, OH; and his first wife, Carolyn Slaughter (Smith) of Edmond, OK.
