FORMER ROLAND PHYSICIAN DEAD DR. E. RICE OF AMES DIED MONDAY MORNING FOLLOWING HEART ATTACK Dr. Earl Rice, 67, former Roland physician, died at his home in Ames about 4:30 a. m. Monday slightly more than 12 hours after he suffered a heart attack. He was stricken Sunday about 4:00 p. m., just as he and Mrs. Rice were leaving home for an automobile ride. Tho in ill health since a fall about three years ago in which a leg was injured, Dr. Rice had been feeling good and proposed to take the drive with Mrs. Rice under the sunny sky and balmy atmosphere of Sunday afternoon. He was at the wheel, and had gone only a few blocks when he began to feel very bad. He turned about and drove back home. Once in the house, his condition became serious and he declined rapidly until his death early Monday. Funeral services will be held this afternoon at 2 o'clock from the Congregational church, with Rev. H. K. Hawley in charge. Burial will be in the Ames cemetery. Pall bearers have been selected from the medical profession in Ames. They are Dr. Ben G. Budge, Dr. E. B. Bush, Dr. W. B. Armstrong, Dr. O. L. Thornburg, Dr. B. G. Dyer, and Dr. G. E. McFarland. Dr. Rice leaves his wife; one son, Dr. Earl R. Rice of St. Louis, Mo.; a daughter, Mrs. Ione Carpenter of Harlan; and four brothers, Dr. T. L. Rice, Ames dentist; J. B. Rice and W. P. Rice of Canton, Minn., and S. O. Rice of Portland, Ore. He was born December 8, 1865 in Fremont township, Winneshiek county, Iowa. Electing to enter the medical profession, he was graduated from the medical school at the University of Iowa in 1891, and practiced at De Smet, S. D., for three years. Returning to study, he took a post graduate course at the College of Physicians and Surgeons, Chicago, and returned to private practice of medicine at Marshalltown. A short time later he moved to Roland, where he practices medicine for 19 years, moving to Ames in 1914. He was married to Minna A. Willford, December 25, 1892, at Canton, Minn. During the World War, he received a commission as captain in the medical corps and served some months at Camp Greenleaf, Ga. Dr. Rice was actively connected with the affairs of Roland and community during the 19 years that he was in practice here. Besides attending to his professional work, he was interested in the banking business, serving as director of the old Farmers Savings Ban for many years. He also served for some time as a member of the school board. After moving to Ames, he became interested in the banking business there also and was elected president of the Union National Bank in 1931. The following year, after a merger, he was elected president of the Union Story Trust and Savings Bank, which position he held at the present time. He was a member of the Blue lodge of the Masonic order, and of the commandery and Za Ga kig shrine in Des Moines. He had been a member and director of the Ames Golf and County club for several years, and was a former president. He also served a year as president of the Story County Medical association, in 1930-31.
