Ebenezer was more preoccupied by politics than medicine. Soon after arriving in Mecklenburg County he sought and won election to the Virginia state assembly. Ebenezer was more preoccupied by politics than medicine. Soon after arriving in Mecklenburg County he sought and won election to the Virginia state assembly. He undoubtedly represented the election district containing Abbeyville, the place where lived. (He never worked in medicine again. Rather, the censuses indicated he received an appointment as a federal revenue agent. This probably explains his death not at home but in Alexandria, VA.) I know of his election from reading the obituary of his mother-in-law Margaret Hemphill Cunningham, who died in far away Beaver Fall, Pennsylvania and was buried at the now defunct Clark Park Cemetery in Beaver Falls, PA. The obituary contains this tidbit of information about Ebenezer: MRS. MARGARET CUNNINGHAM Mrs. Margaret Cunningham, widow of the late Judge Thomas Cunningham, a war judge appointed by President Buchanan for Topeka, Kan., was found dead in bed Monday at her home in Beaver. She was 88 years old. She leaves four daughter Mrs. James Cameron of Beaver, Mrs. E.P. McClain (sic)[should be McLean], wife of a member of the Virginia state legislature, of Abbeyville, Va... As the above obituary indicates, Ebenezer was married to another McLean also buried at Bluestone Independent Baptist Church Cemetery, at Find A Grave Memorial#88648168, namely Anna Amelia [CUNNINGHAM] McLean b. 15 Oct 1845 in Beaver City [subsequently Beaver Falls], Beaver County, Pennsylvania d. 26 Oct 1928 in South Hill, Mecklenburg County, Virginia 4. The only other McLean with a find-a-grave record at this same cemetery, as Ebenezer McLean e.g. Annie Belle McLean at Find A Grave Memorial#88648247 is the unmarried daughter of Ebenezer and Ann Amelia Cunningham McLean.
