FULLIAM, physician and surgeon of Muscatine, Iowa, was born in this county on the 10th of March, 1858, and is a son of Dr. George W. and Elizabeth (Vannatta) Fulliam, whose sketch appears elsewhere in this volume. He was reared in Muscatine, and received his education in the city schools, graduating from the High School in the class of 1878. He was always of a studious nature, and having access to his father's library, soon became interested in medical works. Reading more, he soon had a desire to follow the practice of medicine as his profession, entered the Chicago Eclectic Medical College, from which institution he graduated in the class of 1879, and later attended lectures at Rush Medical College, in the same city. He is a member of the Eclectic Medical Society of Chicago, and also of the Des Moines Medical Society. Dr. Fulliam is essentially a self-mad man, and no person living in Muscatine County today is entitled to greater credit for rearing himself from a comparatively humble position to one of eminence in his profession. He is still a student, as is every first-class member of his profession, and keeps abreast of all the latest discoveries in medical science. The Dr. is well fitted out with a collection of the finest instruments and appliances of any physician in the county. He is at present County and City Physician, which position he fills with credit. In 1881 he was united in marriage with Miss MARY NYENHUIS, a daughter of Chris and Bermeuda Nyenhuis, early settlers of this county. The Dr. is a member of the Masonic fraternity, belonging to Iowa Lodge No.2. The portrait of Dr. Fulliam may be found in this volume. Special to The Democrat Muscatine, Ia., Jan. 6. - Dr. Edward B. Fulliam, Sr., aged 68 years, member of the firm of Fulliam & Fulliam, physicians and surgeons, former mayor of Muscatine and widely known in the medical profession, passed away last night at 11:45 o'clock at his home, 416 West Third street. His death followed an operation Nov. 8, at the Hershey hospital, where he had been removed following an attack of gangrenous appendicitis. After the operation, his condition was at first hopeful but complications resulted and his health declined rapidly. He was removed last Sunday evening from the hospital to his home. Native of Muscatine. Dr. Fulliam was born March 10, 1858, in Muscatine, the son of Dr. George W. and Elizabeth Van Atta Fulliam, natives of Virginia and Pennsylvania, respectively. His parents first settled in Nauvoo, Ill., removing from there to Muscatine when the Mormons marched westward to Salt Lake. They were among the pioneer settlers of Muscatine. The son spent his early youth in his parents' home and attended the public and high school. Following in the footsteps of his father, who was a well known physician and surgeon, Dr. Edmond Fulliam decided upon a medical career. He attended Rush Medical college of Chicago and the Bennett Medical college of that city, and was graduated from the latter school with the class of 1879. He had since practiced in Muscatine and for some time has been associated with his son, Dr. Edmond B. Fulliam, Jr. His ability as a leader in his profession has been widely recognized in the extensive practice which he has been accorded. He has always kept in close touch with the progress of medical science, and because of his skillful surgery has frequently been summoned into consultation by medical men of distant cities. Married in 1884. The marriage of Dr. Fulliam and Miss Mary Nyenhuis occurred in Muscatine in 1884. Four children were born to this union, Edmond, who died in infancy; Hortense and Gertrude, both of whom survive with Dr. Edmond Fulliam, Jr., the second of the name. Mrs. Mary Nyenhuis Fulliam passed away June 21, 1905, and Dec. 7, 1908, Dr. Fulliam was married to Miss Jeanette Nicola, a daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John Nicola, early residents of Nichols, Ia. Mrs. Fulliam was the first white child born there. Was State Representative. Politically and fraternally, Dr. Fulliam has always been a leader in the local community. He was honored with various local and state offices, serving a term as representative from the Second Iowa district in the general assembly. He served five years as mayor Muscatine and as chief executive of the city his efforts proved of material benefit in the city's progress and improvement. During his first administration he laid the first brick paving in Muscatine, and also the first sewer pipe. For two years he held the office of city health physician, and was county physician for a term. He also served as pension examiner under President Grover Cleveland. He was a member of the Iowa State Medical society, serving as president of that organization for three successive terms, and the National Eclectic Medical society. He was also president of the Loyola Medical alumni, Bennett School of Medicine, Chicago. In fraternal circles he was a member of the Masons, Odd Fellows, Elks, Eagles and Red Men. Also active in avenues in business, Dr. Fulliam operated extensively and successfully, serving as president of the company that brought to this city the Muscatine, North and South railroad, and as president of the starch factory that was established at Greeley, Colo. The Surviving Family. Besides the widow, Mrs. Jeanette Fulliam, he is survived by his son, Dr. Edmond B. Fulliam, Jr.; two daughters, Mrs. Hortense Dratz and Mrs. Gertrude Crull, both of Muscatine; two brothers, Stonewall Fulliam of Muscatine and William Fulliam of St. Joseph, Mo.; and a half-sister, Mrs. Sultana Bartlett of Muscatine.
