"Pete" Petit, 90, whose life was characterized by his great wit, knowledge, and storytelling that never failed to delight all in his presence, died March 18, 2015, in Greenwood, S.C. Born Dec. 10, 1924, in Charleston, S.C., he was the son of the late Eugene Edward and Elise Guice Petit. Dr. Petit was the husband of the late Helen Miller Leaman, whom he met on a blind date at Winthrop University where she was a student. They were married from Aug. 21, 1949, until her death June 4, 2006. After graduating from Winthrop Training School in Rock Hill, S.C., Dr. Petit attended The Citadel for his freshman year and then enlisted in World War II. He served with the 20th U.S. Army Air Corps, a combat air force deployed to the Pacific Theater of WWII. Stationed in Okinawa, Japan, he flew reconnaissance missions throughout the war and returned home on Christmas Eve 1945. He entered the University of South Carolina in January 1946 and graduated in 1949 with degrees in chemistry and biology. He was a proud (and often long-suffering) Gamecock fan from 1938 until his death and was a member of the Carolina Alumni Association's Centurian Club. Dr. Petit devoted his life to public service. After graduating from USC, he became a teacher and coach at Dana High School in Dana, N.C., and then worked for seven years in scientific research for the U.S. Public Health Service in Chapel Hill, N.C. His research was published in scientific journals, including the Journal of the American Chemical Society, Journal of Organic Chemistry and Experimental Biology and Medicine. He entered the UNC School of Dentistry in 1958 and earned his degree in 1962, graduating with honors. He established his dental practice in Greenwood in 1962 and retired in1994. His practice was his life's passion. A Shriner and a Mason, Dr. Petit spent his retirement as a doting grandfather, caregiver, and member of the Northwest Volunteer Department and Greenwood Presbyterian Church. Regarded for his keen sense of humor that spared no one, Dr. Petit was a well-known bass fisherman and fished competitively in tournaments into his 80s. He never met a bass or a fish tale that he didn't like, and his love for spending time on the lake in the pursuit of a big fish is legendary. Dr. Petit is the descendant of French Huguenots who settled in the colonies in the 17th century and of patriots who fought in the American Revolution. His 32nd great-grandfather was Hugh Capet, the first King of the Franks, and Dr. Petit's lineage is traced to the Emperor Charlemagne. Dr. Petit was proud of his military service and the opportunity to serve his country, joining other members of his family who had served in the military since the American Revolution. He served in the Air Force and left duty as a U.S. Air Force major. One of the greatest moments of his life was the opportunity to travel with other veterans on the Honor Flight of South Carolina to Washington, D.C. In addition to his parents and wife, Dr. Petit was preceded in death by his daughter Kathy Elise Petit, brother Ralph Eugene Petit of Belleview, Fla., and several dogs whom he loved, including collies Sport 1 and Sport 2; a toy poodle Cindy; and Hoover, a hyperactive Jack Russell terrier. He is survived by his daughter Karen Petit of Columbia, S.C.; granddaughter Leaman Elise McCarley and her husband Caleb Hunter McCarley of Greenwood; and granddaughter Caroline Mosby of Myrtle Beach, S.C. A visitation is planned for 6 – 8 p.m. Friday, March 20, at Blyth Funeral Home in Greenwood. The funeral will be at 10 a.m. Saturday, March 21, at Blyth Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Archie Moore officiating. Burial will follow at the historic Liberty Springs Presbyterian Church cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be made to Northwest Volunteer Fire Department, 201 Oakwood Drive, Greenwood, S.
