Crary, 60, Choteau dentist since 1913 and one of the city's distinguished citizens and benefactors a a long period of years, was stricken with cerebral hemorrhage early Sunday morning at his ranch on the Teton northwest of Choteau about 15 miles, and died in the ambulance as he was being rushed to Great Falls in the hope that something could be done to save his life. In excellent spirits and apparently in normal health, Dr. Crary left Choteau last Saturday evening to spend the weekend at the ranch and supervise work there. He arose early and was out with his 10-year-old grandson and Wesley Heyer, sophomore at Teton high school, doing chores when the attack struck him. The young grandson immediately telephoned his father, Dr. L.J. Crary at Fairfield, and also Dr. H.W. Bateman at Choteau, saying that his grandfather was very ill and unconscious. He asked that the ambulance be sent from Choteau, and later went with a ranch truck to the main road to direct the ambulance to the ranch. Meanwhile, the two boys rolled the doctor's body onto a blanket in the corral where he had fallen, and dragged him into the house. The amtulance and two doctors soon arrived and started with the doctor, still unconscious, for Great Falls. He died enroute without regaining consciousness and the body was returned to the Banks Funeral Home in Choteau. It is thought that extra heavy duties in connection with his practice in recent months, due to a considerable extent to war-time conditions may have rendered the doctor more susceptible to the attack. He had expressed his uncertainty to one member of the family, with strict instructions that others of the family were not to be informed. High blood pressure had been a symptom in his case for some time. The months before his death had been the heaviest and most profitable of his entire period of practice. The son of Judge Oliver Crary and Agatha Crary, Dr. Crary was born Jan. 1, 1884, at Elkader, Iowa, being the sixth child of a family of nine. His earlier education was received at his home community and from there he entered the Iowa State college at Ames. He then entered the dental college at Northwestern University at Evanston and Chicago, Ill., from which institution he received his D.D.S. degree in 1906. He practiced his profession in Leeds, N.D., from 1906 to 1913. While in that state he met Miss Emily Sturgeon, a graduate of the University of North Dakota, but who was reared in Canada. The young couple were married in 1913, and thereafter came to Choteau to make their home. The two have resided here ever since. They built a beautiful home on First Street northeast and down through the years the two were active in the business, social, and civic life of the city, and devoted much time to welfare activities. The acquisition and operation of the Royal Theater had been one of their major activities. This, however, has been almost entirely under the management of Mrs. Crary. Always a lover of the outdoors, Mr. Crary purchased the old Robert Fairburn ranch on the Teton about 10 or 12 years ago. He also maintained a hunting lodge on the north fork of the Teton, and this was a Mecca for huntsmen and vacationers for many years. He was past president of the State Dental Association and was serving an appointment as a member of the state board of dental examiners. He was a member of the Masonic Order of Choteau Lodge No. 44, A.F. and A.M. He had advanced to a 32nd degree Mason and was a member of the Algeria Shrine, Helena. In Choteau he belonged to Teton Chapter No. 25, Royal Arch Masons, and to Bethany Commandry, No. 19, Knights Templar. He was a charter member and past president of the Choteau Lions Club and was a past president and active member of the Teton County Sportsmen's association for many years. He had also been a member of the board of directors of Teton County High school and served in many other capacities. The immediate survivors are the widow, Mrs. Emily Crary; a son, Dr. Lyall J. Crary, prominent physician of this area whose home is in Fairfield; two grandchildren; two sisters, Mrs. Lucy C. Prentis and Mrs. Alice Brandt, who live in Iowa; and three brothers, Avery of Calif., George of Hot Springs, Mont., and Arthur of St. Olaf's, Iowa. The funeral was held yesterday afternoon at the Masonic temple in Choteau and was one of the largest ever held in the city. Folks of high and low rank came from all parts of the county to pay their respects to a man who had been a factor in their life, health and happiness.
