Description	:	Dr. Elmer Wesley Miller, known as "Buster", was one of five children born to Joe & Lauretta (McFarland) Miller on November 21, 1922, at Hastings, Nebraska. He passed away at the Woodruff Community Hospital in Long Beach, California, May 7, 1989, at the age of 66 years, 5 months and 25 days. Read More	Dr. Elmer Wesley Miller, known as "Buster", was one of five children born to Joe & Lauretta (McFarland) Miller on November 21, 1922, at Hastings, Nebraska. He passed away at the Woodruff Community Hospital in Long Beach, California, May 7, 1989, at the age of 66 years, 5 months and 25 days. He attended grade school in Mount Clare, Nebraska and Colorado Springs, Colorado and high school at Platte Valley Academy in Shelton, Nebraska. At the age of 16 he left school to drive trucks for his family's trucking business, to help his family who were struggling to survive the Great Depression. Elmer continued working to help his family until he was drafted into the Army in 1942 as an infantry soldier. He served in France and Germany. During this time he confided to his brother, Jerry, that he knew he was going to die. He just didn't know which day it would be. Although almost all of his unit never returned, he did and was awarded the Bronze Star for Bravery. He returned to Nebraska after the war and took his high school equivalency exam and with his brother, Jerry, entered Union College in Lincoln, Nebraska. In 1950, he married Jeanette House and from that union two daughters, Sherry and Faye whom he loved very much, were born. Years later a foster daughter, Alicia, made her home with the family. And from those three daughters, there were four grandchildren, Crystal, Apryll, Jenna and Dustin, whom he adored. Miller graduated from the School of Optometry in Memphis, Tenn. and in 1954 he moved to Neligh, Nebraska, where he practiced optometry for 9 years. Then in 1963 Elmer and Jeanette uprooted and moved to California to be closer to his brother, Jerry who along with Elmer practiced optometry and medicine in the Long Beach area for the next 26 years. It was during that time that Elmer became involved with his brother in an organization (World Health Volunteers) that Flew to Mexico monthly to assist and provide medical help to the poor and deprived. Elmer gravitated to this work with a true missionary spirit. He spent the next 25 years feverishly working to find more time and money to help the people that he found there. He also found, with his brother Jerry, two things that would from time on speak directly to his heart, helping the poor and underpriveleged (sic) and flying airplanes. In the August years of his life, Elmer met and married Carol Barger and for a very brief 10 months forgot all about a lifetime of cares and responsibilities. He seemed to everyone who knew him to smile a bit "too" much and even skip a bit when he thought no one was looking. That in far "too" few sentences was the life and times of Dr. Elmer Miller, a loving son, husband, father, brother, friend to most of you here. To all of us who knew and loved him something more needs to be said. Elmer Miller was a quiet man not at ease with words, with an easy smile and an innate gentleness of spirit that endeared him to everyone who knew him. He loved life and was at peace with himself and his world. Jerry, his brother said he was fearless and brave in his protection of his family and that included his human family, the poor and the weak and the ill. So all the adjectives apply to this one good, dear brave man who loved his family, his country, and his God. Elmer Miller was born in his faith and lived in his faith and died in his faith. He and Carol were recently re-baptized and in their wedding vows, 10 months ago, Elmer and Carol wanted the ageless verse "Come take my hand, grow old with me. The best is yet to be." Unfortunately for Carol, they never had those years they wanted to grow old together. Elmer was at peace with himself and his God. Now Elmer is sleeping, awaiting the return of the Lord he trusted and believed in to take him home to a world made new and he knew that one day he would be reunited with all of his loved ones. Funeral services were held Tuesday, May 23, 1989, at 2:00 p.m. from the Megrue-Price Funeral Home Chapel in Superior, Nebraska, with Pastor Harold Kaufmann officiating. Music was provided by soloist, Debi Garrison singing a selection of "Amazing Grace" with Lynn Wilton as organist and accompanist. Casketbearers were: Dale Miller, Curtis Miller, Jim Miller, Larry Miller, Randy Rhoads, and Roger Wilton. Burial was in the Nelson Cemetery. Megrue-Price Funeral Home of Superior, Nebraska, was in charge of arrangements.
