Description	:	Fabius Julius Haywood, Jr., was born in Raleigh, Wake Co, NC, eldest of 4 children born to wealthy physician/planter, Dr. Fabius J. Haywood Sr, and his wife Martha Helen Whitaker. His two younger brothers, Joseph Allen Haywood (1842-1908) and John Pugh Haywood (1947-1910), never married and are buried in Oakwood. His younger sister, Mary Engles Haywood (1844-1886) married Daniel Gould Fowle, Governor of NC (from 1881-1891), who died suddenly in office. They are also buried in Oakwood. His paternal grandparents were John Haywood & (2nd wife) Eliza Eagles Aspah Williams, who was State Treasurer of NC for over 40 years and first Mayor of Raleigh, and who built "Haywood Hall" in Raleigh; the the oldest house within the city limits of Raleigh that is on its original site. This John Haywood was a well-known and respected citizen, but when he died in 1827, nearly $70,000 was missing from the state treasury, and the State of North Carolina seized his personal property, leaving Eliza nearly penniless, widowed, and the mother of 10 children to raise. To support her family, Eliza opened her Raleigh home to traveling legislators and her home became a well-known boarding house. Fabius is a direct descendant of John Haywood (1690-1758) of St. Michaels, Barbados who married Mary "Lucy" Lovett of Beverly, MA and established his plantation "Conecanarie" in Halifax (now Edgecombe) County, NC. On his mother's side, he his grandson of Cyrus Whittaker of Burke Co, GA and Mary Rogers, who later resided in Wake Co, NC. Like his father and namesake, Fabius J. Haywood became a doctor with a practice in Raleigh. At the outbreak of the Civil War, he enlisted with the NC 5th Regiment, serving with companies G and E, and rising to the rank of Lieutenant and was aid-de-camp to General A. P. Hill at the battle of Malvern. After the war, he returned to his parents home in Raleigh where he studied to become a doctor. In 1877, the 37-year old physician married 21-year old Nancy "Nannie" Grimes, daughter of wealthy plantation owner William Grimes & Elizabeth Hanrahan of Raleigh. The couple would have two known children: Fabius J. Haywood, III (ca. 1877) and William Grimes Haywood (1878). Dr. Haywood was widowed in 1908, with the passing of his wife. He remained in Raleigh and practiced medicine until his death in 1911 at age 71. Just prior to his death, his only surviving son William Grimes Haywood married, and Dr. Haywood was able to live long enough to see the birth of his first grandchild, William Grimes Haywood, Jr., born December 31, 1911. Dr. Haywood passed 3 days later. Dr. Fabius Julius Haywood and Nannie Grimes Haywood had 2 sons that survived and married. The sons were Fabius Julius Haywood lll and William Grimes Haywood. Fabius Julius Haywood lll moved to Concord.
