Blake Dr. Gary Dean Blake, 79, born March 22, 1937 in Marshalltown, Iowa to Oral W. and Stella A. (Robison) Blake, passed away September 10, 2016, in his home in Overland Park, Kansas. He married Mary Alice Matthews in Searcy, Arkansas on November 21, 1956. He was a member of the Church of Christ. He graduated in 1959 with a BA, in Biblical Studies from Harding College in Searcy, Arkansas. He received his Master's Degree in Special Education from Gallaudet College in Washington, D.C. in 1960. He taught at School for the Deaf and Shattuck Military Academy in Faribault, MN for two years. In 1962, Gary and Mary, along with their two oldest children, left for Addis Ababa, Ethiopia where he and Linnie Darden started the first School for the Deaf. In 1963, they returned to Hot Springs, Arkansas where Gary worked for the Rehabilitation Center for 5 years. They moved to Fayetteville, AR where he received his Doctorate in Special Education from the University of Arkansas. He immediately began as a Professor in Deaf Education at the University of Arkansas and taught for 12 years. In Fayetteville, he helped start the first Sertoma Club in NW Arkansas. In 1982, the family moved to Overland Park, where he was the Minister for the Deaf and a counselor at the Overland Park Church of Christ for 11 years. In 1993, Dr. Blake began Blake Counseling Services offering Family and Marriage Counseling. In 2006, he became the Minister of the First Church of Peculiar in Peculiar, MO. Survivors are his loving wife and best friend, Mary (Matthews) Blake, His children: Matthew (Pattie) Blake of Whitehouse, TX; Elizabeth (Michael) Straughn of Lenexa, KS; Lisa Blake of Upper Peninsula of Michigan; Joseph Blake of Kansas City, MO; and Jennifer (Mark) Hardesty of Overland Park, KS. Grandchildren: Rebecca (Walter) Paterson of Conroe, TX; Mary Rachal Blake of Abilene, TX; Joanna Blake of Bangkok, Thailand; Aaron, Jon, Landen and Lily Blake of Whitehouse, TX; Blake Michael Straughn of Lenexa, KS; Jaynie and Bethany Brautman and Blake Autumn Hardesty of Overland Park, KS; and Kayla Hardesty of Blue Springs, MO. His great-grandchildren: Shane, Levi, and Gabriel Paterson, and Mila Hardesty. Brothers and Sisters-in-law: Allen (Eunice) Blake of LuVerne, IA; and Don Blake of Milan, MI; Ruth Blake of Culver City, CA, and Velma Blake, Schaller, IA. Preceding him in death: his parents Oral and Stella (Robison) Blake, Marshalltown, Iowa; brothers and sisters-in-law, Wallace Blake of Culver City, CA, Walter Blake of Schaller, IA, Roger and Betty Blake of Burleson, TX. Judy Blake of Milan, MI; sister and brother-in-law, Barbara Marshall (Bill) Hoffman of Lakeview, OR and Glenn Marshall of Madeline, CA. Dr. Blake served God and others his entire life. He was a devoted and loving husband, father, grandfather, son, brother, uncle and friend. A visitation will be held on Wednesday, September 14th from 5:30-7:30 p.m. at the Johnson County Funeral Chapel, 11200 Metcalf Ave, Overland Park, KS 66210. A Memorial Service will be on Thursday, September 15th, at 10:00 a.m. at the Overland Park Church of Christ, 13400 W 119th St, Overland Park, KS 66213. Burial will be at the Johnson County Memorial Gardens following services. Honorary pallbearers include: Allen Blake, Don Blake, Curt Sparks, Jack Bowers, Charlie Garretty, Dick Morris, Marlin Hunt, Richard Riepe, Tony Rigoli, Blake Straughn, Aaron Blake, Jon Blake, and Landen Blake. Gary served God and others his entire life. He loved music and loved watching and supporting his children and grandchildren with their music programs in high school in Overland Park. In Iieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made in Gary's honor to Shawnee Mission South Band, 5800 W 107th St, Overland Park, KS 66207 or to Shawnee Mission West Orchestra, 8800 W 85th St, Overland Park, KS 66212 .
