Callahan, 62, longtime Johnson County coroner and medical examiner, died Tuesday at Veterans Hospital, Knoxville, after a long illness. He practiced medicine here from 1932 until ill health forced his retirement in 1967. A native of Iowa City, he was first elected coroner in 1936 and served in that post until leaving for World War II service in the Navy. He again was elected coroner after the war, serving until the coroner's position was replaced by that of medical examiner in 1961 and he became the first medical examiner. Dr. Callahan resigned as medical examiner in 1967. Funeral services are pending at the Donohue Mortuary. Born in Iowa City, Jan. 30, 1907, he was a son of Daniel M. and Mary Swatchsue Callahan. He was a graduate of St. Patrick's High School and the University of Iowa, from which he received a medical degree in 1930. He married the former Helen Anderson in 1934 [Aug. 22].
