Description	:	Dr. George Baker was born in Jennings County, Indiana, near Vernon. His parents were Maurice/Morris and Margaret (?) Baker, the former a native of Virginia and the latter of Maryland. They were married in Virginia, moving to Indiana soon afterward. There were twelve children; seven sons and five daughters. All but one grew to maturity. Davenport was then an Indian trading post of the... Read More	Dr. George Baker was born in Jennings County, Indiana, near Vernon. His parents were Maurice/Morris and Margaret (?) Baker, the former a native of Virginia and the latter of Maryland. They were married in Virginia, moving to Indiana soon afterward. There were twelve children; seven sons and five daughters. All but one grew to maturity. They were among the early pioneers of that part of Indiana. In the autumn of 1836 the family removed to Scott County, Iowa, the doctor being then thirteen years of age. Here they were again pioneers. Davenport was then an Indian trading post of the Fox and Sac Indians, of whom Black Hawk was the chief. Here the father took a tract of land, and made a home, where he resided until his death. He and his wife lie buried in the Blue Grass Cemetery, ten miles west of Davenport. George was reared on his father's farm, and has had a large experience in pioneer life, having passed the most of his life on the frontier. Before coming to Iowa he had the advantage of nearly two years' instruction at the Vernon Seminary, which was a very important event in his life, as schools in Iowa were very limited at that time. In 1843 the doctor began the study of medicine, with Dr. Andrew P. Ringer, with whom he remained two years. He commenced practice in Rock Island County, Illinois in 1847, where he remained three years. In 1851 he started with his family over-land for California, but after getting as far as Ottumwa he abandoned the enterprise on account of the wet season and high water. He returned to Rock Island and practiced two years longer, then removed to Hancock, County, for the purpose of taking charge of the sick on the line of the Quincy & Peoria Railroad, which was then in the process of construction. Here he remained about a year, then returned to Ottumwa, and practiced three years, thence to Decatur County, locating at Decatur City until 1861, when he moved to Leon. He now lived upon his farm in Center Township, one mile north of Leon, and is still engaging more or less in his practice. He was married in Scott County to Maria Clark, daughter of Captain Benjamin Warren Clark. They had at least two sons and one daughter; Erastus Warren, Clarence Clark and Ida Mae, wife of Charles Clapp of Fort Scott, Kansas. They may have had two more daughters; Harriet and Laura. His second wife was Susan Warner, daughter of John Warner. They had two children; George and James I. George had a sister, Harriet, wife of Captain Clark of Buffalo living near him at Leon in the later years of his life.
