SMOOT. A telegram received at this place Wednesday morning by Dr. Jas Smoot, of near town, gave the sad intelligence of the death of the venerable Dr. Henry J. Smoot, at his home in Luray the night before. He was one of the leading citizens of Luray and was probably one of the best known and highly respected residents of Page county. For many years he was one of the leading and most successful physicians of that section, but for the past eighteen or twenty years he was conspicious as a lawyer, he having abandoned the practice of medicine for that of the law. Doctor Smoot was a native of Shenandoah county, and in early life lived in Woodstock where he commenced the practice of medicine. He has a large relationship in that section of the county, two of his brothers, Messrs. Hampson and David Smoot, are residents this neighborhood. The late James W. Smoot was also a brother. Dr. Smoot married Miss Marth Yager a very attractive and highly cultured daughter of one of the leading families of Luray. Shenandoah Herald, December 7, 1900 EX-STATE SENATOR DEAD Dr. H. J. Smoot, of Page County, Passes Away. LURAY, VA., December 5. - (Special.) - Dr. H. J. Smoot, of this place, ex-State senator from Page and Shenandoah counties, died last night at 10 o'clock at the residence of his son-in-law, Dr. W. L. Hudson, after an illness of a couple of weeks. Dr. Smoot's condition was recognized as very serious, but it was hoped that he might recover. His death, therefore, comes with a shock to the community. He was 72 years of age, and was a native of Shenandoah county, but had resided in Luray for many years, where he married Miss Martha Yager, a sister of Colonel W. O. Yager, of this county. His wife died several years ago. He leaves two daughters - Mrs. W. L. Hudson and Mrs. H. V. Hudson. Dr. Smoot was a physician, but abandoned the profession for that of the law many years ago, and at the time of his death was perhaps the most prominent member of the Luray Bar. He long enjoyed a lucrative practice. He was a member of the Christian church for a number of years. Richmond Times Dispatch, Thursday, December 6, 1900, p. 5
