His first medical practice was in the coal fields of southwest Virginia where Amos Hatfield, one of the feuding Hatfields and McCoys, gave him a revolver to carry in his saddlebag as he made his calls on patients. The horse on which he made his rounds at the time was an American Saddlebred mare, Nellie, sired by southern King. a stallion purchased by his father, James Dickie, of "Valley View" from Mr. Thomas F. Ryan of "Oak Ridge" for Herbert Dickie's brother, Will. Leaving the coal fields, Dr. Dickie established a practice in Wilmington, NC, where in 1914 he married Miss Kate Russell Durant, daughter of a local ferryboat captain. Dr. Dickie planned to enter the Army at the onset of US involvement in WWI. He had closed down his medical office in Wilmington and brought his wife and children to the farm in Nelson County to stay with his family for the duration of the armed conflict. However, during his farewell visit at "Valley View," he contracted the infamous 'flu' of 1918, suffered a col lapsed lung, and was declared physically unfit to go to war. Dr. Dickie and his young family stayed on at the farm with his widowed mother, Mrs. James Dickie, his brother, William Lewis Dickie, and three unmarried sisters. He established a rural medical practice and joined his brother to form Dickie Brothers, the name they gave to the orchard and farm business they had inherited from their father. Doctor and Kate, as they were familiarly called, had twin sons, Herbert Grasty, Jr. and James William, and a daughter, Margaret Louise. In 1926, the year that Will Dickie married Sallie Ervine and brought her to "Valley View," Herbert Dickie built and moved in "Breeze Hill" on a knoll across the meadow from the old family home. Constructed of native stone and framed with oak cut on the farm, the house was built by Jack Kirt, a local building contractor. "Breeze Hill" was not just a family home. It also served as Dr. Dickie's medical office. What is now a formal parlor was originally the patient treatment room. In addition to holding office hours at "Breeze Hill," Dr. Dickie visited patients in their homes, going to them at first on horseback or in a horse-drawn carriage, and in later years by automobile. If any of his patients needed hospital care but lacked transportation, he took them to the University of Virginia Hospital in his own conveyance. Inspired by their father's example, both sons became Medical Doctors and their sister graduated as a Registered Nurse and later earned her Bachelor of Science degree in Nursing. Dr. Dickie died suddenly on May 7, 1950, and his widow, Kate, following his wishes, returned to Wilmington, NC to live with her sister, Hattie. When she left the farm, she leased her land to her brother-in-law, Will Dickie, and his wife, Sallie. The house was leased separately to a local fam ily. Will and Sallie's daughter, Emilie Louise, and her husband, Captain Thomas H. Bruguiere, USAF, moved to "Breeze Hill" in 1958 at the end of Tom's military service and bought Herbert and Kate Dickie's farm, including the house, in 1961. They operated as partners with Will and Sallie Dickle, keeping the farm name of Dickie Brothers. At the "Breeze Hill Farm," Tom and Emilie raised their sons: Thomas Harold, Jr., Robert Dickie, Curtis Smith, and John Ervine.
