Lawrence, age 79, of Conway, Ark., died Thursday, April 25, 2002. He was born June 7, 1922, in McRae, Ark., to Harry Warren and Mary Hall Lawrence. He retired from AETN where he worked for sixteen years as Instructional Programming Administrator and laid the foundations for educational television and its success in Arkansas. He received his Ph.D in instructional Media from the University of Arkansas in 1958-1966. Prior to this he was coach, teacher, principal and superintendent at Pangburn and taught and coached at Floyd. He earned a B.A. degree in Business Administration from Harding College in Searcy in 1947, where "Pinky" Berryhill interested him in the field of education. He received a Master's Degree in Education from Peabody in Nashville, Tenn., in 1952. During World War II, Dr. Lawrence served as a technical sergeant in the 288th Field Artillery Observation Battalion in the European theater. He received three Bronze stars for campaigns in Ardennes, Rhineland and Central Europe. Dr. Lawrence served on the Arkansas P.T.A. State Board of Managers for seventeen years,; the Board of Arkansas Audio-Visual Association (now the Arkansas Association of Instructional Media) for 26 years; secretary-treasurer for the United Commercial Travelers Insurance; and president of the Jacksonville Lion's Club and Conway Noon Lion's Club. In 1987-88 he was District Governor for Lion's Club of Arkansas's 7N and from 1988-89, he served as Council Chairman for Arkansas Lions. Before his retirement Dr. Lawrence taught audio -visual courses at Temple University in Philadelphia; University of Arkansas and UCA. Herb Lawrence was a beloved father, brother, uncle, grandfather (Papa), and soon to be great-grandfather. His hobbies included gardening and raising strawberries, which he freely shared with his many friends. Dr. Lawrence is survived by his wife of fifty-four years, Thelda May Healy of Fort Collins, Colorado; a son and daughter-in-law< Herbert Warren and Susan Benson Lawrence of Batesville; a daughter Lanette Lawrence Grate of Grand Rapids, Mich., and Darell Major of Conway; a sister, Harriett Stiles of Memphis; five grandchildren, Christen (Jeremy) Mitchell, Tim Lawrence, Rhonora Grate, Kethurah Grate, and Lyren Grate; two nephews, Larry Stiles of Knoxville and Harry Stiles of Memphis; numerous nieces and nephews-in-law; as well as an extended family of many dear friends including Bill and Sharon Grady of Batesville, Dowell Maxey of Conway and Linda O'Dell of Conway; and Toni Weaver and the other caregivers who have provided in-home care. The funeral service will be 2 p.m. Monday, April 29, 2002, at Westbrook Funeral Home, 404 West DeWitt Henry Drive, Beebe, with burial in Beebe Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 2 to 5 p.m., Sunday, April 28, 2002, at Westbrook Funeral Home. Pallbearers will include Tim Lawrence, Jeremy Mitchell, Dowell Maxey, Ron Ross, Ben McNew and Bill Bounds. In lieu of flowers, the family suggest a donation be made in Dr. Lawrence's name to the Conway Noon Lion's Club to be used to help the visually impaired.
