Description	:	Herbert Nelson was born in Eddyville, Iowa, to Albert and Bessie Mae (Durham) Nelson on June 15, 1922. He died March 18, 2011. Read More	Herbert Nelson was born in Eddyville, Iowa, to Albert and Bessie Mae (Durham) Nelson on June 15, 1922. He died March 18, 2011. Herb's father was an Iowa coal miner and mother, a housewife. Both were proud that all three sons earned medical or doctorate degrees. On Dec. 23, 1943, Herb married Carol Hofert in Plover, Iowa. She has truly been the love of his life. They had four children. The family lived for 12 years in Salem, Oregon before moving back to Iowa City where he worked for the University and he and Carol were avid Hawkeye fans for the next 48 years. Herb earned his BA from University of Iowa in 1943; his MD from UI in 1946. He was a diplomate of the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology. He interned at University Hospitals, U of Iowa, 1946-47. His residency was at Brooke Army Medical Center, Fort Sam Houston, Texas, 1947-49 where he served as Captain MC U.S. Army. He worked at the VA Hospital, Knoxville, Iowa, 1949-51; Oregon State Hospital, Salem, 1951-52; Clinical Director, 1952-63; Assistant Prof. Psychiatry at U of Iowa, Iowa city, 1963-66; Associate Prof. Psychiatry, 1966-73; Professor, 1973-84; Prof. Emeritus, 1984-; Director Iowa Mental Health Authority, Iowa City, 1968-82; Medical Director Mideast Iowa Community Mental Health Center, Iowa City, 1969-84; Adj. Prof. Tulane University, New Orleans,1974-77. He co-authored several monographs and contributed to articles in professional journals. Herb and Carol attended the Methodist Church. He was a lifelong Republican and loved fishing, golfing, woodworking, painting, gardening, and traveling. He could fix just about anything and enjoyed performing many amazing tricks for his children and grandchildren, including the infamous flaming newspaper balloon. Herb was proceeded in death by his younger brother, Dan, in Nebraska in 1988 and is survived by his other brother, Bob in Arizona. His wife, Carol of Iowa City, and all four children survive: Kent Nelson and Donna Thibault of New Hampshire; Vicki Nelson of North Carolina; Thad and Joanne Nelson of Oregon; Cylda and Lynn Gontero of Iowa City. There are six grandchildren. Sunny Copp, Florida; Carissa Kaiser, Oregon; Tara Espenel, Colorado; Damon Birdsong, North Carolina; Kylie Birdsong, North Carolina: Jake Gontero, Iowa. Herb has requested a family gathering to celebrate his life. There will be no public service. He will be missed!
