Description	:	Information from official documents and obituary: Hiram J. Hartley was born in Springtown, NJ. He moved to Ohio with his parents and family in 1837. He was one of the 49ers attracted to CA, but he did not go overland, but by way of the isthmus. He returned eastward about 1854 and in 1857 completed his education at Miami Medical College, Cincinnati. He settled in Vigo County, IN and was licensed there; type of practice, allopath. Hartley was born in Springtown, NJ. He moved to Ohio with his parents and family in 1837. He was one of the 49ers attracted to CA, but he did not go overland, but by way of the isthmus. He returned eastward about 1854 and in 1857 completed his education at Miami Medical College, Cincinnati. He settled in Vigo County, IN and was licensed there; type of practice, allopath. He married in Vigo County on 20 May 1855, Rebecca C. Lee. His obituary tells us that after a long and eventful life, Dr. Hartley died at his home on the first hill north of W. R. McKeen's Spring Hill farm at 1:00 a.m. Cause of death was cancer. He had lost an arm to cancer and finally it took his life. He left a daughter Nellie, whose husband was employed by the Fromme Co., and two sons, Harry L. and Charles. Another daughter, Harriet, died about fifteen years before her father's death. Dr. Hartley was widely known and liked in his community where he lived for so many years.
