Description	:	Jacob William Wells, born 5 June 1868, was one of three children born to Caroline (Hoyer) and Moses Peter Wells in West Union, Fayette County, Iowa. Jacob's grandfather William Wells was a founder of West Union. Jacob graduated from Rush Medical College in Chicago in March 1891, after which he was an attending physician at the Iowa Hospital for the Insane in Independence, Iowa. Read More	Jacob William Wells, born 5 June 1868, was one of three children born to Caroline (Hoyer) and Moses Peter Wells in West Union, Fayette County, Iowa. Jacob's grandfather William Wells was a founder of West Union. Jacob graduated from Rush Medical College in Chicago in March 1891, after which he was an attending physician at the Iowa Hospital for the Insane in Independence, Iowa. He next went to Europe and graduated from the Berlin School of Medicine in 1897. A passport issued 10 August 1895 described him as 5'10-1/2" tall with a round face, black hair & slightly bald with a mustache. In 1900, he was a physician (an "allopath") in Ossian, Iowa, and lived near his future sister-in-law, Maria (Peyer) Figge, and her family. On 8 June 1900, Jacob married Victoria Peyer, daughter of Celestine and Caroline (Fertig) Peyer, in Fayette County. They had two sons: Urbey Eugene, named after his infant brother "Urbie" who had died in 1867, and Gersham B. At some point, Jacob was treated at a private sanitarium where he was supposed to have been cured of cocaine and morphine habits but, in 1905, he was committed to the Iowa Hospital for the Insane for excessive use of narcotic drugs. Jacob later returned to his practice in Ossian. In 1911, the "West Union Argo Gazette" reported that "one more name must be addded to the list of those who died as a direct result of the heat--Dr. J.W. Wells of Ossian, Iowa, who succumbed to the heat at his home Sunday evening (2 July 1911) after an illness of one day only." The two doctors who were at his bedside were unable to save their friend. "The passing of Dr. Wells was a source of bereavement to the entire community. He was widely known as a physician and enjoyed the confidence of both the profession and of the people." Jacob's wife Victoria remarried several years later to John Patrick Duffy in Spencer, Clay County, Iowa, where she died in 1938. CENTOTAPH The West Union Cemetery gravemarker with the inscription "Jacob William 1868-1911" is a centotaph. Jacob is buried in Hillside Cemetery in Ossian. (Find A Grave Memorial# 21301843) The name of his infant brother "Urbie" is inscribed below Jacob's name. Urbie (1866-1867) has an individual gravestone in the same West Union Cemetery.
