Dale was born the second of three sons in Alliance, Nebraska on Sept. 8, 1930, to Cloyde Elvet and Margaret Irene Maxwell. When Dale was a teenager, the family moved to Sterling, where Cloyde and Margaret would live for the rest of their lives. Dale graduated from Sterling High School in 1948, then continued his education at the University of Colorado at Boulder. After graduating in 1952 with a degree in chemistry, Dale moved to Borger, Texas, to begin working for Phillips Petroleum Company. Soon afterwards, Dale met Nadia Dvirnak of Killdeer, N.D. They were married at the Dvirnak Family Ranch in the summer of 1954. In 1955, Margaret Carole was the first of nine children they would have. In 1957 Mary Susan was born in Bartlesville, Okla., where Dale was employed at the time. With the idea of pursuing his dream to become a physician, the family moved to Tallahassee, Fla., where Dale earned his master's degree in biochemistry. Through a challenging and remarkable series of events, Dale was accepted into the University of Miami College of Medicine in the fall of 1959. In 1960, James Dale Jr. was born and in 1962 Barbara Joanne was born. After graduating from medical school, the family moved back to Colorado so Dale could complete an internship at Presbyterian Hospital in Denver. In 1965 the family added John Edward to the gang. A series of professional opportunities led the family from Longmont to Wichita where in 1966 Charles Philip and Mark Albert were born. In 1967 the family returned to Tallahassee for Dale to become the team physician for the Florida State University Seminoles. Gator Bowl and Peach Bowl appearances were two of the many highlights during those hectic years. In 1970, Dale and Nadia moved the family to Oklahoma City to pursue a residency program in radiation oncology. While at the Oklahoma University Medical Center Dale was part of a pioneering research team using radiation to screen and treat breast cancer. Treating patients afflicted with cancer would be Dale's professional passion for the rest of his career. Dale loved the outdoors. In 1980 the family moved to Great Falls, Mont., which provided a beautiful location for Dale and his family to enjoy Mother Nature. While in Montana, Dale redefined the term "house calls." He acquired his private pilot's license, then logged more than 800 hours flying between Great Falls, Helena, Missoula and Billings to provide compassionate care to his patients. The final 17 years of his distinguished career Dale worked with more than 200 respected physicians at the prestigious Palo Alto Medical Clinic in California. During this period, patients consistently selected Dale as their favorite physician when completing patient satisfaction surveys. Dale's life was dedicated to the service and personal sacrifice for others. He lived 81 years giving his best 3/4 be it as son, brother, husband, father, physician, or friend. Dale was a member of the Acacia fraternity, The American Society of Radiation Oncology, and The American Medical Association. He was an ordained elder in the Presbyterian Church and sang in many choirs. Dale and Nadia were active members of the Presbyterian Church in the many cities they called home. Dale's passions were art, classical music, reading, and poetry. Time with family and friends was one of his greatest joys. His sense of empathy, compassion, generosity, and willingness to serve others was and will always be an inspiration. His life serves as a shining example to those who knew him. Relationships with family, friends and patients were priorities throughout his life. Those fortunate enough to say they "knew" him remain forever blessed. Helen Keller said: "What we once enjoyed and deeply loved we can never lose, for all that we love deeply becomes part of us." Dale is survived by his wife, Nadia; children, Carol Gilpin and her sons Charles and Jonathon, Mary Kirkmeyer and her husband Greg and their daughter Gabrielle, James and his wife Diana, Barbara Shanahan and her husband Tommy, John and his wife Margaret and their children Henry, Elliot and Clara and Mark and his wife Ashley and sons Griffin and Charles. Seven grandchildren were also an important part of his life. Dale was preceded in death by his parents, Cloyd and Margaret; brother, Don and his wife Dixie; brother, Kenneth; daughters, Nancy and Christine; and granddaughter, Anna Nadine.
