JAMES KING WINFREY Father, Colleague, Friend, Mentor James King Winfrey was born September 6, 1931 in Ames, Iowa. He was the second of two children born to Robley and Verne (nee Cooper) Winfrey. Jim lived in and attended school in Ames through college. He graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree from Iowa State University in 1953 with a major in Industrial Psychology and a minor in General Engineering. While at Iowa State, Jim was also a member of Cardinal Key, the University's Honor Society recognizing leadership, scholarship and character, served as senior class president and was enrolled in the Navy Reserve Officers' Training Corps (ROTC). He would serve in the Navy for three years following college as a lieutenant Jim attended the University of Minnesota in Minneapolis, where he received his Master's Degree in Educational Psychology in 1958 and his PhD. in Psychology with concentration in Counseling and Guidance in 1963. Jim married Carol Ann Madill December 31, 1960 in Minneapolis. Their 14-year marriage produced two of Jim's greatest sources of pride, Sons Grantham James, born November 12, 1965, and Kenton Cooper, born October 4, 1968. Both sons are San Francisco natives. Jim was appointed a professor in the Department of Counseling at San Francisco State University in 1964 and taught, mentored and befriended students and colleagues alike for over 30 years. He was beloved by the many students and colleagues he influenced. Jim cherished being a teacher and lived proudly in San Francisco for 45 years, primarily at his well-known "private travel museum" at 36 Palm Avenue, where he also entertained guests in grand style and was father to his sons. Jim was a national leader in the field of counseling and counselor education through active participation in his professional associations. He served as President of both the Association for Counselor Education and Supervision (ACES) and the Western Association for Counselor Education and Supervision (WACES). Jim also served as Treasurer of the American Counseling Association (ACA) and was on the Board of the ACA Insurance Trust. He simultaneously ran a private practice, counseling patients individually. He was appointed professor emeritus at San Francisco State University in 1996. Jim was a patron of the arts, with a particular love for the opera, symphony and ballet, and he attended these performances in cities throughout the world. He was also passionate about travel and pursued his love through exotic and far-reaching treks and as a travel guide aboard many cruises. Jim is officially recognized as one of the most traveled people in the world, reaching a peak ranking in the top ten and having traveled to 256 different countries. It was while hosting a cruise around the world aboard Cunard's Queen Mary 2 that Jim passed away. The QM2 was at sea, near the equator and the Galapagos Islands when Jim died. He was 77 years 4 months and 29 days old. Jim is survived by sons Grant and Kent, brother Robley, 10 nieces and nephews and numerous other extended family and friends.
